Lived most of my life in Greater Boston, but I'd think that one advantage a lot of people would see in L.A. over Boston would be weather. And maybe a more laid-back way of life, that often seems to be found in places with mild climates.
If you don't specify which problems you're talking about with the statement that Los Angeles "has so many problems," it's difficult to respond to that assertion. L.A. does have one long-running issue that I mentioned in my last post on this thread: air quality. When it comes to some of the other obvious challenges--crime and homelessness--those seem to have gotten really out of control in L.A. in just the last few years. The poll in this thread is older than that, so L.A. likely got a lot of votes before crime and homelessness in L.A. really became news-making issues.
As for describing Boston as "more sophisticated," what does that even mean? That's a statement that really can't be addressed unless you specify in what ways you consider Boston more sophisticated.
Choosing between these two cities, I'd prefer Boston myself, despite the fact that the weather can be unpleasant for a good chunk of the year. That's partly because Boston is home, but also because I prefer the old-style cities that are densely built, and have most of the amenities concentrated within easy reach in a central area.
Despite the obvious drawbacks of Boston's climate for much of the year, one plus about that is that it's a moist, east-of-the-Mississippi climate. Out in the suburbs and the rural countryside beyond the city, I prefer the green lushness of forests and fields to the brown, and low-scrub, desert scenery in many areas around L.A.
Personal preferences there, but I'd say we'd need more details on what problems in L.A. you're referring to, and what you mean by "sophisticated," to address those claims.
