All you have to do is get in to the playoffs any way, any how. Not many people talk about the 100 plus win Cardinal teams of 2005, 2004, etc..just the 83 win World Series Winning team of 2006 that had the team's longest losing streak in 18 years. People don't talk much about the Cardinals not having back to back full losing seasons since the 1950's. (the Dodgers are next, mid 1980's) Nope, it's the WS team of 2006 and their other title teams.

Regular season doesn't matter once the first pitch is made in post-season, especially with extra rounds, and the short 5 and 7 games series. Many of the WS winners in the past decade plus have been Wild Card teams.

The regular season does matter, as it's probably the best indication of how good a team really is. A Wild Card team winning the World Series is an overachiever, while a 100-win team losing in the first round is an underachiever. Everything is considered when evaluating the success of a team!

What exactly should they have been cheering for? The grand slam? The 7 walks given up by the starting pitcher before he ever got to finish the 5th inning? Leaving a struggling pitcher out there when the umpire has a strike zone the size of an icebox and the pitcher still can't find it? How about another inning-ending double play by Derreck Lee? Perhaps they should have cheered as Fukudome, once again, corkscrewed himself into the ground chasing a ball that's 6 inches off the plate? Or Soriano's exquisite 0-5 performance? Or the bullpen giving up another 3 runs? The crowd didn't take the energy out of the team; the team took the energy out of the crowd. I feel sorry for anyone who paid $300+ to sit through that debacle.

On a side note, what the HELL is with TBS superimposing a fake Jumbotron onto the center field scoreboard? Those knobclowns shouldn't be allowed anywhere near Wrigley Field ever again.

I did not say they should be cheering bad plays or failure. You are supposed to cheer on your hitters as they are announced and you are supposed to heckle and boo opposing players when they are announced. You cheer strikes for your pitchers and cheer balls for your hitters. You cheer for outs for your defense. These people were not in the game at all even when the Cubs had the lead.

The crowd makes an impact. So what about the Grand Slam. That does not mean you sit there and not give energy for the rest of the game. At that point they were only down 2 runs.

It wasn't just the grand slam that dejected the crowd. It was having already watched 7 batters get walked, seeing that Dempster had absolutely no command, the fact that he was left out there to twist in the wind anyway, watching batters take pitches right down the middle and then chase balls at their ankles and 8 inches off the plate, the inability to produce any base runners, and the lousy relief pitching. If the Cubs had played like they had heart and lost anyway, then the crowd should have been behind them regardless of outcome. But they played like they expected to lose, and the crowd took their cue from the team. If the team wants adulation and support, they need to play like they want it.

*Sigh* Well, Z did his job tonight. Now it's up to the rest of the team to try to climb out of the hole they've dug themselves.

What a disappointment. I'm glad Z pitched a good game. Only two earned runs, and a whole lot of screw-ups by others. If the 8th and 9th aren't completely amazing for the Cubs, I don't even want to think about having to win three in a row. What a mess.

Wow, what a stunner -- Cotts gives up another run. Unfortunately it will be charged to Z.

You know, I'm actually tired of having good teams that get our hopes up. A big part of me misses the days when the team sucked but you could walk up to Wrigley, buy a ticket from the box office the day of the game, sit and relax, enjoy some beer, and cheer on the home team without much emotional investment in the outcome of the game. I was hoping we could get a World Series under our belt before returning to those days, but it doesn't look like it will happen soon.
