I grew up in Chicago. Born in 1956 and resided there until 1987. My mom still lived in our childhood home until she died in 2005. I still have a brother that lives in the city.

I was a senior in high school-freshman in college in 1974. The city’s deadliest year was 1974, when police recorded 970 homicides. I realize that Chicago also had a higher population back then, so the per person rate is different.

I was never afraid. I would be in the bars until 2 AM and walk home alone 2 miles. I grew up in Rogers Park.
Were their murders in Rogers Park back then. Yes, but they were rare. No social media so they were only in the newspaper and were usually acquaintance based. And there were gangs but they largely went after each other.

Of course everyone alive back then remembers 1966 and Richard Speck killing 8 nurses. He was quickly caught.

I think the crimes now are more brazen. They also happening during the day. That was rare back when I was younger. And the gangs in Rogers Park used knives more then guns.

To me, this reads like that CNN picture where the headline was "mostly peaceful protests" with a burning building in the background.

Stray bullets seem to be a thing now.. which is not good

I guess, does it really make sense to leave a safe place like Dallas, for Chicago in it's current state..

I left Chicago end of 2020.. and it was due to fear of crime. If things are noticeably worse NOW.. it must be pretty bad

Nice little riot at Millenium Park, one dead teen so far.
Hoodrats running all over Michigan, Madison, State, Wabash. The infestation continues.

For what it’s worth, I think the city has also gotten dirtier. Has anyone else noticed an increase in litter pretty much everywhere or is it just me ?

But ya there’s no sense in worrying about stray bullets. In sort of a sad way, I think it‘s a respectable and useful skill to know the difference between gunshots and fireworks anyway

Stray bullets have been a thing for a long time. The bangers aren’t known to be particularly good shots.

Yes, I've been thinking this too. Just over the last year the streets seem to have more garbage that isn't cleared by morning. I often pick up half-drunk bottles of soft drinks, fast food bags with half-eaten fries, etc. and throw it in the nearest garbage receptacle (rarely more than 10 feet away) and I've seen other do it too (and I make sure to thank them). I think falling down on cleanliness contributes to the "broken windows" phenomenon whereby the accumulated impact of relatively minor environmental details (e.g., public intoxication, panhandling, jackassery behavior) creates an environment that says "no one cares what you do here."
Last year, I routinely saw street cleaners hard at work at night and/or early in the morning. Now, I can't remember the last time I saw a sanitation crew.

As a Christmas gift to a favorite neighborhood, Lincoln Square, I cleaned garbage out of the streets, sidewalks, and plantbeds, for a couple of hours.

And I live in Milwaukee! Point is: Imagine if everyone gave little help, how much could get done!

Have a great night, all.

Does crime feel worse? YES! Look at this chaotic video of the Loop this weekend

https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/vide...in-the-loop/#x

Floods of teens running around like animals causing chaos.

I’m so sick of this. As much as I love this city, I am about ready to look elsewhere.

Wow. So is this the same group that is "unfairly" targeted by police? I saw "young people" trying to open the car doors of people driving thru. It looked like a pack of wild animals. Just scary. Its just sad because the police seem so helpless against such large numbers. This is what happens when the scum of society doesn't have a respect or fear of the police. Its a tradeoff

Next weekend, water canons need to be on stand-by.
But, the city elected a cupcake; so it will continue unchecked.
