"Violators of the city ordinance can face a $50 fine. Although Mayor Richard M. Daley said people should clear their sidewalks of snow, he said the city won't enforce the ordinance."

Why not? The city is having major problems with its budget and funding sources. If this was enforced (within reason) every day it snowed there are tens of millions to be made every year.

This storm has been pretty weak so far. 3-4 inches? That is child's play.

Uptown came through with 4" or so. Enough that it's annoying when people didn't shovel, but still very easy to just walk through.

For now anyway. Then within a couple days it will get packed down to ice with footprint shapes in it. That's not easy to walk on. Or push a stroller through, or pull a grocery cart over, and if you're wheelchair-bound you're really hosed. I'm with Avengerfire on this one; of all the ways this city uses ticky-tack little tickets and fines as a way to extract revenue from people, this is one instance where I wish they'd actually do so. Or better yet, come clear the sidewalks that don't get cleared and leave the property owner a bill.

If residents need to do it so does the CTA. I walked through more snow on the sidewalk in front of an L stop then I did in my other 8 blocks

That's because they haven't gotten to it yet. The CTA is typically vigilant to the point of overkill, where you end up walking across mounds of salt instead of mounds of snow.

The person that works in the station needs to grab a shovel instead of staring into space. Itll take all of 10 minutes and we dont need to pay somebody else to do it

The person that works in the stations in a lot of cases don't work for CTA- they work for Securitas. Their job is to provide security not to be shoveling snow
