BUT if you said to most people today---I live on the northwest side, and then told them you live near Clemente High School, they may look at you like your crazy. In todays world, for most people, the northwest side conjures up images of the bungalow belt and beyond in areas like Belmont Cragin, Portage Park, Jefferson Park, Norwood Park and Dunning. I think the best description would be "near northwest" if you wanted to get technical. But I think most people that live in Bucktown/Wicker Park area would simply say I LIVE ON THE NORTHSIDE. End Discussion.

Haha. Even with a freeway and river separating that part of the city, it's still the north side? Awesome.

It is up to individuals. My My grandma grew up near North and Damen and then she and my grandpa had my mom when they lived in a little further north on Armitage.

Both of them refer to the area as the west side.

So, I suppose there may not be a general consensus.

I've lived north and I've lived south. Right now (and for decades) I live south.

This forum definitely has a north side aura to it.

Yeah I know, that is because most of the city's population now lives on the north side. Don't worry though, I am a southwest sider, and the Clearing neighborhood is DEFINITELY the southwest side. haha

Ah yes, that is for sure.

To go further on jwaiter's hypothesis - is there any data or study done on demographics of the average forum/message board user?

I hang out with regularity on about 3 or 4 of them. *Most* other people come across and articulate and fairly well educated. Are these the types of people that might use such a medium of communcation?

We have almost 1/4 who answered "None of the Above," I'm interested to know where they're located???

I probably should have made options for the chi-suburbs, the east side and the loop!

All that time we lived in Uk Village, I could have been telling people I was a West-sider!!! Opportunity missed.

Logan Square now, so I voted "NW side"

I voted None of the Above because I live in KC.

For what it's worth, when I lived in Wicker Park I told people who weren't familiar with Chicago that I lived northwest of the loop, so I guess I considered myself on the Northwest side. Then again I sat on the North Ave bus for fewer than 5 minutes and I'd be in what just about everyone would consider the heart of the northside.

Another "none of the above" vote - I live in the Loop and there was no option for downtown in your poll. I am a little bit north of Madison, but I don't think it counts as Northside.
