I have a G35 and have been very happy with it (more so than our 07 5 series actually).

Although if you're looking for a newer car all 2008+ models are G37's.

The 2007 530i is a nicer car inside and out in terms of material quality, interior etc. It's also rides on a great feeling chassis, so road feel is phenomenal. That said, the G35 feels like a smaller, more maneuverable car (although curb weight are very similar) and the lack of the BMW gadgets makes for a simpler car. I don't mind the iDrive so much but my girlfriend absolutely hates it and prefers to be in the G35 at all times. I'm also not willing to modify the BMW unlike my G35 which has an upgraded suspension, engine components, intake, exhaust, ecu flash, etc. The G35 ends up being a much faster, more responsive, better handling (if harsher) vehicle which is exactly what I want in a car. The performance difference can be covered by getting the 535, 550, etc but I have a feeling that aside from very high end 5 series models I wouldn't find one that is nearly as enjoyable as my G35. As an unmodified ride the BMW is great. I've never driven a car that has better feeling handling and road feel while providing a ride that isn't overly harsh from the factory. I suppose someone else (particularly anyone who just wants to badge w-h-o-r-e) will find the BMW to be preferable but I enjoy driving my cars and the G35 provides the best experience of the two.

In today's dollars, I refuse to pay more than $25K for a vehicle. I can see a heavy duty vehicle for towing or carrying payload, but for an Escalade? Nope...I'm not into vanity.

If I had $40k to spend and wanted a nice SUV, probably. The 6.2L is a great engine and the car demands attention.

However, if I had $40k to spend, I'd want a new car. I'd get a new Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland if I didn't need the extra seats.

I wouldn't own either of those cars. The ES is simply there for people to flog the Lexus badge on an otherwise mediocre car and the Navigator is 2nd runner up to the already questionable Escalade.

I like the Escalade, I always have. However, the older models, pre-2007, were more unique than their GM cousins and carried less of a mark-up. If I was looking for an Escalade style vehicle today it would be really hard to justify it versus a GMC Yukon Denali, which is the exact same truck, with the exact same engine (FYI, until 2009 you could only get the 6.2L in the Escalade or Yukon Denali. Now, you can also get it in the Tahoe LTZ, but all non-Denali and non-LTZ's use the standard 5.3L). So, what's the difference between a Yukon Denali and an Escalade. The front grill, badges and the price. The Denali is far and away the better buy if you want this kind of truck and don't care about the "status" of an Escalade. The Denali is even arguably better looking with its more conservative sheet metal.
