I'm more interested in how Publix compares to Pathmark or Giant (the one from DC) for comparison purposes for people originally from the mid-Atlantic. How about Meijer, for people from some areas of the midwest? (even Kroger, as I'm also familiar with them)
Yes, I sure wish we had a Kroger. I have been a loyal Kroger shopper all my life. I always bought my gas there at their pumps too because I would get .50 off a gallon of gas simply because I had shopped there that month. It was great. I moved here and can't figure out why the grocery stores don't have incentives like that. All the stores there had gas pumps and price reductions. We had Kroger, Giant Eagle and Meijer doing it. I never had to pay full price for gas til I got down here and I miss it. And why can't I find Diet Mountain Dew with no caffiene anywhere down here except if I travel to WalMart in Mooresville?
We did have Kroger here years and years ago but they have been gone for quite some time. Same goes for Winn Dixie. I've been here for over 35 years and remember as a child shopping at the one Harris Teeter, then they started booming and other stores just packed up and left town. If people weren't shopping at them, then they wouldn't keep building them. But I think there are so many now and so many people coming from other parts of the country, people demand some choice and competition.
Harris Teeters did awful in the Atlanta area. About 8 years ago all 14 closed and Kroger took over almost all of them.
The ones I've been to were miserable -- small, terrible produce, long lines, and meat department not much better than Food Lion. The nicer Harris Teeters are all better than any Publix I've ever shopped at. Although I have to agree that Wegman's is the best of all - maybe someday.
There's a local loyalty to HT as well since they are not foreign owned (Food Lion and Bi-lo are, don't know about Publix). HT is a local company still based in Matthews and does a lot for the community. Outside of NC and the Charlotte area, they have very few stores. The service is good; the stores are clean, but they do need to come down on $. Service doesn't mean much to me when gas is $5 a gallon. I would rather go to Aldi's sometimes and bag my own groceries.
HT/Lowes are very nice stores. Clean and laid out well but very overpriced. I went to HT one night and bought like 20 items. I then went to Walmart and bought the same 20 items. I spent $21 less at walmart!!!! So I will only go into HT on dire emergency as there's one like 2 blocks away.
Publix has good prices much lower than HT/Lowes but doesn't compare environment wise.

Publix is a private company, owned by its employees.
Being a Floridian I have to honestly say that Publix is a couple of steps below Harris Teeter or many of the other grocery stores in the area. Krogher is about the same as Publix as I used them regularly in a couple of states. The only problem is that Harris teeter is a bit higher and I generally shop there for specials otherwise other stores. Publix is a little better than Winn Dixie though. It also matters whether any of the stores are "A" stores or "C" stores.
Kroger pulled out of CLT after they did some mysterious buy/sell store swap with Bi-Lo.
There was a story about 10 years ago that Publix had bought some land in the area (I had heard about one location near CMC-Pineville), but pulled out when Hannaford came to town.
Hannafords were nice. HT basically stole their format once Food Lion bought them and closed the CLT stores to satisfy the anti-trust lawyers.

3 words- vast rightwing conspiracy.
We just love it when people refer to the term "Down here". Other than having a gas tank, I don't see any reason one would miss Kroger. It is just an average grocery store. Not bad,but only average.
