I was working out in my garage and I saw something flying around. Truth be told, I thought it was a WASP that had either killed or was mating with a mutated honey bee. It looked like two BIG bees stuck together. I had my iPhone with me so I snapped a pic. I wish this pic could relate the size of this thing flying around. Never seen anything like it.

o/p or others can't just go on google image search and trial and error keywords? I wanna see it since every large bee in NC has been covered..

FYI: there are about a dozen color and size variants of japanese hornet. Some can make you sick, like the black and white banded ones.

I saw one of these the other morning - a hummingbird moth. Trippiest thing! Floats & darts from flower to flower like a hummingbird. I stopped to get a pic, and I saw... it has insect legs! What? And antennae! Crazy! Then the bee-stripes, and clear wings! And it was quite large, larger than the one in this picture.

No stinger!

these are most definately found in South Jersey as well. They were all over certain years growing up there. I recall two years specifically being trapped inside with a half dozen or so of them swarming around the porch. A child was also killed by them in a field during one of those years and those the cicada killer wasp was blammed.. these guys straight up petrify cicadas.. Id rather avoid them for sure.

I have seen one around here as (Bossier City, La.) well. Born and raised in this area and never seen one. I've also looked for photo's and have found nothing close to the size of this bee monstrocity! I've read of the cicada killers and the newly cited Asian Giant Hornets but those are only suppose to grow to around 2-2 1/2 inches long. If I were to hold this thing in my hand it would take up the entire palm area and some of my finger area with the wings touching both sides....and very menacing looking

I remember seeing a documentary about these things. Gigantic.

Between the Chernobyl disaster, and the Fukushima catastrophe I have wondered what new species could be in the making due to the spread of the radioactivity leaked from the reactors. Not to say this insect the OP was talking about is some Godzilla-like mutant bug, but radiation can cause curious changes in living organisms, and there has been a copious amount of radioactivity injected into the ecosystem over the past decade, or more from different incidences. I am only offering speculation, but, stranger things happen in this world. Five legged frogs found in Minnesota are one incident that comes to mind. I am certain there are others, but they escape me at the moment. Not only radioactive material has been let loose on the planet, but other chemicals are in the food chain as well, and we have yet to determine the long range effect they may have on living organisms. I am for responsibility when it comes to stewardship of our world, but I am by no means an Eco-Warrior when it comes to this subject. But in reading this and looking at the pictures of the insects,my mind began to wander, and it ended up here.
