1.7% of those with diagnosed with Omicron were hospitalized in South Africa. At the same time in the Delta wave, that was 19%.
Good news indeed. We need to stop focusing so much on cases.

I think it probably still a bit early to draw any firm conclusions.....without more data and studies

https://www.imperial.ac.uk/news/2326...icron-england/

" Imperial College London COVID-19 response team estimates that the risk of reinfection with the Omicron variant is 5.4 times greater than that of the Delta variant."

"The study finds no evidence of Omicron having lower severity than Delta, judged by either the proportion of people testing positive who report symptoms, or by the proportion of cases seeking hospital care after infection. However, hospitalization data remains very limited at this time."

South Africa's population probably is moderately younger than in the United States, the UK, or anywhere else in the Western world, making Omicron somewhat more of a concern here.

What I'd like to know are its risk to pregnant women and how easily it spreads in outdoor air.

What is the data in the real world? If a person cant see the difference between what Delta did to South Africa vs. what Omicron did, they may be beyond help.

Not saying the UK will play out like SA, but some in Europe are trying to hard to make it out to be the same when the outcomes have clearly been different so far.

There are/were some encouraging indicators coming from South Africa.....but, it remains to be seen how it plays out elsewhere. It has been predicted that Omicron will crowd out the Delta variant at some point in this country and elsewhere. When Omicron will overtake Delta is unknown. Is it possible to contract both Delta and Omicron? (seems that is possible according to link below) My understanding has been that you could get infected with both the flu & COVID

One conclusion that could be reached if things turn out to be more severe with Omicron in other countries would be that prior infection protects better than vaccines. South Africa has a much lower vaccination rate than the UK but a much higher prior infection rate. That is contrary to what experts have said, but at this point in time, you can find an "expert" to tell you anything.

Perhaps that is a question to submit to those that conducted the UK study. I already stated there were positive indicators from the SA as did Dr Fauci. My sense is that here and in Europe they want to take a cautious approach until they have more data.

Ok. That’s respectable.
