'Lockdown' states like California did better economically than 'looser' states like Florida, new COVID data shows:

Ridiculous "study" that ignores that California has had both a higher age adjusted death rate and higher unemployment rate throughout COVID. Actual statistics are pretty clear that lockdown states paid an unnecessarily high price during COVID.

Living with COVID-19, once restrictions are lifted: The virus is here to stay. Here’s what that means.

The virus is here to stay, yet will pose less danger over time, they predict. While risk remains, it’ll be tolerably low. The virus will join the ranks of other coronaviruses that circulate in humans. We’ll learn to co-exist without lockdowns, masks and social distancing.

“We’re going to incorporate COVID-19 into our lives, just like we’ve incorporated influenza into our lives,” said Dr. John Swartzberg, clinical professor emeritus of infectious diseases and vaccinology at UC Berkeley.

Okay, but currently many or most places aren't there yet. Including Los Angeles, which that and just about every other source seems to gloss over.

Only 54% fully vaccinated in Los Angeles County. Lower-income areas, I'll euphemistically call them, likely have lower rates and so would the businesses that cater to them. Yes, I know the effective percentage with immunity is higher due to infections from the winter and fall, but probably not high enough.

What's more, Los Angeles doesn't have the good sense to either fix that urgently or extend county restrictions. Garcetti is in another disappearing act, this time maybe permanently (rumored to be getting a Federal appointment).

That story was about cases and hospitalizations not vaccination rates. As long as cases and hospitalizations remain low/manageable what does it really matter whether or not we hit whatever vaccination rate you and others have in mind?

The whole point of vaccination is to keep non-trivial infections from happening. This is summer, when the virus doesn't spread as easily. If vaccination doesn't increase and everyone gets in the habit of being unmasked except in very limited circumstances, that foretells problems later this year. The article did not say a subpar vaccination rate goes with a decent outcome, not this year anyway. People who live where there's hardly any virus shouldn't shrug off the concerns of people who live among the dumbies.

Yeah but we don't actually know what the vaccination rate specifically needs to be so you can't solely rely on that as a metric. It's always been cases and hospitalizations driving these restrictions so not sure why that should change now.
