I don't believe that's the way it works. I'm not a medical professional, but my impression is that the death rate is for infected individuals, not for the entire population. If you know 50 people who have come down with COVID-19 and 2 die, that's 4%. Not 50 people you know.

Death rate in population is a separate thing and much lower than death rate in infected individuals.
US death rate in infected individuals of COVID-19 is around 0.5%.
This had been determined after massive random testing efforts in more than one US location.
At this point, discussing "several percent" rates on...gasp, internet forums...just ridiculous and speaks bad about IQ of those who post that old stuff.

Ok lets ignore science. In favor of what? Trump based sites?

Maybe use some common sense. Actually infected much more compare to what is known. The reality is, most people will never know they were infected and will never get counted as such.

Thank you. I’ll check it out. However, raw numbers don’t tell the whole story. What’s the percentage broken down by age group and people with underlying conditions?

It’s one thing to say the mortality rate is 6-7%. It’s another if 80% of those fatalities were people over 70 with underlying conditions.

One of those links is old, anyway. But counting deaths out of positive cases and arriving at a percent is fiction. Everybody knows that. The CDC knows that. The President knows that. The actual percent (death rate) is - necessarily - lower than that number yields because at least SOME people are infected that have not been tested. How many more? A lot.

Why? Because lots and lots of people never ever show symptoms, and so - why would they get tested? Right now, it seems about at least half of people never show symptoms. And many others have very mild symptoms, they won't get tested either.

So several million people are infected, could be 10 million or more. With even 100K dead (we're not there yet) it would be a 1% death rate. You can say it's only 5 million sick - then it's a 2% death rate (no one thinks it's that high, FYI) - but there's not really an easy path to 4 or 5 or 6%. The real answer is trending lower - not higher - so CDC feels it's something around 0.5%. That means about 15 million people are infected - and half of them are in NY/NJ.

Of those that die - 75% are age 70 or above. Most have an underlying condition - but most people over age 70 DO have an underlying condition, so that is not surprising.

I saw a similar number. That’s why you can’t go by raw numbers. They’re misleading. The mortality rate for healthy young adults is not 6-7%.

Once they knew this, they should have lifted the stay at home order for healthy people under 60 and left it in place for those over 60 with underlying conditions and everyone over 70. Something like that. The economy would not have had to suffer so much.
