Alabama had another strong showing on this year's Inc. 5000 list.

For 2022, 60 Alabama companies made the list. While it is a drop from 75 in 2021 and 73 in 2020, it is still a notable showing from the state.

According to Inc., which produces the list, the Alabama companies had 257% median growth and $4 billion in total revenue, both major increases from 2021. The company said 8,427 jobs were added with seven newly founded companies added to the list and 36 repeat honorees. Alabama's median growth was 11.09% higher than the median growth for the full list.

Birmingham had 20 companies on the list and contributed 62.5% of the state's total revenue with $2.5 billion. Median growth for Birmingham was 246%. The Magic City also added 6,078 new jobs, 72.1% of Alabama's total on the list, and had 13 repeat honorees.

Excellent showing from Birmingham. Birmingham still is the economic engine for the state.

So... I'm no rocket scientist, but by my math that would still mean B'ham accounts for more revenue than the other three major metros combined, right? I guess all that talk of decline and being of lesser importance was just that... talk.

That would be correct.

Did you know that you can decline in importance and still be #1? If Disney World took a 10% drop in attendance, it would still be the country's most important collection of theme parks - by far.

If the NFL saw a 5% drop in viewership, it would still be the most watched pro sports league in the country.

It is nice that Birmingham has companies that are growing...
...but the reality is that it isn't like Birmingham is massively overrepresented compared to the country at large. 20 out of 5000 is basically exactly what you would expect given the metro's population.

And I don't know whether this statement is true because I haven't looked at the full list or crunched the data... but I imagine this list skews towards small to middle sized metro areas, while the biggest metros and rural areas are under represented. If that is the case, then Birmingham might be doing average at best regarding this metric.

Kinda right. This list doesn't prove or say much of anything really. It ranks "rate" of growth. So if I have a company where revenue was $1k in Year 1 and grew to $40k in Year 2, you might make this list. It doesn't account for company size, only growth rate which is VERY volatile especially among small companies.

Obviously, it's not bad to be included but it's also certainly not something I'd boast about. Smaller/midsize cities will fair better as they have more small high growth companies.

It's kinda like saying I doubled my wealth in just 2 years! I used to have $10, now I have $20.

How you can help restore the Red Mountain Cut Geologic Walkway

"Although the walkway is currently inaccessible, plans are underway to clear the cut and build a brand-new walkway through it, including new displays with explanations of the geologic formations."
