if y'all haven't walked / ridden / driven down 20th St lately, it's become a pretty nice street. i think the recent improvements were subtle but effective. also the scaffolding is finally down at The Frank (by ZaZa). once that project and a handful of others come online, i think this will be one of the city's more vibrant destinations.

Another James Beard award for Birmingham... this time for Adam Evans, voted Best Chef in the South.

James Beard Awards 2022: Birmingham chef wins Best Chef in the South

Previous James Beard Award winners from the Birmingham metro include:

Highlands Bar and Grill, Birmingham, Outstanding Restaurant, 2018
Dolester Miles, Outstanding Pastry Chef, 2018
Chris Hastings, Hot and Hot Fish Club, Birmingham, best chef South, 2012
The Bright Star, Bessemer, America’s Classic winner, 2010
Frank Stitt, Highlands Bar and Grill, best chef Southeast, 2001

3 active James Beard award-winning chefs in a mid-sized metro seems pretty good (would be 4 if Dolester Miles hadn't retired). Not to mention the numerous nominations for Timothy Hontzas (Johnny's).

“In about 18 months, I had a completely different opinion of the city,” she said. “The Southern charm is what really got me, plus the locally sourced shopping experiences, farm-fresh food, meeting local farmers, chef-run restaurants, live music and theater, the parks, … everything.

“Once I experienced the city myself, I found it inspiring that Birmingham had come so far from such a dark and dangerous history. I’ve lived in cities that were

very closed to newcomers, but here I found a community that is open to my input and ideas.

“Steve and I purchased a home in Redmont Park and recently relocated downtown. It was important to me to make sure that our purchases and lifestyle benefitted the city of Birmingham. … I advocate for people to move their families to Birmingham, and I walk the walk. We don’t live way out in the suburbs. We live in the city, walk everywhere, enjoy the cultural activities, the venues, and the people.”

Looks good, such a great and no-brainer idea. The downtown bridge lights are working again too.
