Well, like everyone involved with the Mets not named Minaya wants him to. Interesting quote from Jerry Manuel: "He won't be the first guy I go to." Another one from Minaya: "Let's see how this works first."

Sounds like he was never actually asked to go down. I give Minaya a C- to a C+ for his time here. The way he and his assistant Tony Bernazard protect certain players is ridiculous. If it ever stops this team might win something. Until then, they'll spend every winter wondering how the Phillies managed to "play over their heads again." What the Phillies actually do is play the game the right way. I've been a Mets season ticket holder for years, but like a lot of us in my section I don't feel like this is my team.

If Perez comes in as a relief pitcher we'll be seeing Armando Benitez all over again. Minaya has not impressed me at all. I'd gladly take back Davey Johnson in a heartbeat.

Bobby V is a much better manager the Davey Johnson.

^^^ Hard to say, Johnson actually won a WS title. Though, Bobby V took the Mets to a WS, and actually won a game against a Yankee team that has swept their opponents in the Fall Classic, and I think were on a 14 game winning streek in the World Series.

Besides, neither is coming back to the Mets. Johnson, I'm sure, is enjoying his life outside of baseball. Where as Valentine has a cult like following in Japan. If you ever watch the special "The Zen of Bobby V", you will see that his man LOVE to manage Chiba Lotte Marines. The guy is insanly popular, there is no way he will trade that.

I am glad to see this comment. I also thought Valentine was an excellent manager. He certainly knew how to use all 25 players on his roster. Unfortunately, he wasn't always "politically correct" when he opened his mouth, and that cost him. Just one more instance of a good baseball man being lost to other concerns.

Bobby V. is not coming back to the Mets, but he's not staying in Japan after this season. He's coming back to the states and he will manage somewhere.

I liked Valentine and he really new baseball, but he was another one who kept pitchers out their way too long and held on to them when they were clearly not performing.

but the talent levels on those teams were incomprable. Bobby V's teams greatly overacheived.

Actually, it occurred to me that Perez in the bullpen would prevent him from hurting the team...

As all Met fans know, Oliver Perez comes in two varieties. There's Awesome Ollie and Awful Ollie. If he's coming out of the bullpen, pulling Awful Ollie out of the game wouldn't kill the relief corps over the course of the season, since it would be late in the game--much easier to substitute one reliever for another than removing a starter in the third. And if Awesome Ollie happens to be the guy on the mound, then the game is all set, since he's perfectly capable of pitching the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. (In fact, an appearance by Awesome Ollie would actually save everyone else's arms!)

True, the 86 team was an All-Star team. However, I will always give a nod to the guy who has a ring.
