why do car alarms make loud honks?

I hate car alarms period, especially when they go off and the owner takes forever to shut it off....it's even worse when it happens to be on an old clunker.

Its definately annoying, but whats even more amazing is how when a car alarm is going off, making all those obnoxious beeps, sirens and horn-blowing, most people these days simply ignore them because alarms have been known to go off sometimes for no reason, and it happens all the time. A lot of people wont even look in the direction of the noise anymore. The one thing I like about mine is that at larger parking places (especially airports) if I cant remember exactly where my truck is, can find it with the push of a button.

They are a little more subdued. I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment complex and one of my neighbors (who has a toyota SUV) is deaf. He comes home in the wee morning hours on weekends and seems to need to get in and out of his car a zillion times before he goes inside. I have a Nissan SUV (2001 Xterra) and when I first got it, it was the first vehicle I've ever owned with a remote key, which also sets the alarm when you lock it. I learned the hard way which button not to push (panic button) because it also sets off the alarm! I was also getting ready to load up some stuff in the back of the SUV at a Home Depot, and the panic button somehow got pressed when it was in my pocket and the stupid alarm went off, and back then I didn't know how to shut it off, so people around me thought I was trying to break into it!

My 2005 Ford Escape XLT has the OEM alarm system. If the alarm is triggered, such as during a forced entry, the stock horns will blow and various external lights flash. Other than that, the system is silent during normal, everyday entry and exit. Any other alarm method would just be more noise pollution.

I remember my first experience with a factory remote alarm. It was a rental car and I was not familiar with the remotes and how they worked at the time. I remember pressing the button that opened the trunk and the thing started honking like there was no tommorow. The problem was, when I had locked the doors when I got out the car with the remote, the alarm also was put on. So, the thing kept honking for several minutes and I decided to call Budget and ask them what the hek is wrong with the thing. Once I got someone on the phone the thing had went off. I was so pissed, I took the car on a joy ride to let off some steam.

I lean on the alarm button on mine all the time while carrying it in my pocket. When the car is in our garage. You have to wonder what the neighbors think...
