I live in an apartment complex with many cars parked closely together. at ALL hours of the night, ppl exit their cars and then you hear a loud honk. i don't think that ALL cars do this, but it is a significant number. since i am a "light sleeper" by nature, it is an annoyance. why wouldn't car makers make these "alarms" more quiet?

It's an alarm it's supposed to wake people up.

It's not an alarm...Just that some cars use the horn when you press the lock button...It is annoying, and I'm glad my car just makes a quiet beep.

It depends on the manufacture - some allow you to silence it so you just see the lights "blink". Others only have a tone.

And yes, those that only provide the horn sound is annoying.

Ours do that but they are not loud. The rental car we had over spring break was LLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDDDDDDDDD! !! Annoyed the heck out of us. Even the kids were getting upset with it. I don't mind a light beep to let you know it DID lock but not this LOUD obnoxious honk like the rental car did when you locked AND unlocked it. Almost embarassing.

No expert here, Wehotex, but I believe the alarm on/off honk is an option easily set by the owner.

It is on my truck!

My car does that, but it's a "light" beep. I remember my 97 Honda Accord did that also but with a LOUD beep! And it actually beeped loud two times when I unlocked it!

The horn honk confirms that the alarm is set. One click of the rmeote locks the doors, the second click sets the alarm and triggers a single honk to confirm that the alarm is set. A horn only has one volume - loud. I hate horn alarms and all car alarms really with a passion. Studies show that they do nothing except regularly annoy your neighbors. Car theives easily disable them or in most cases ignore them. There was a tv show where they interviewed car thieves in prision. They all said that they do not care at all about alarms. Next time I am at a repair shop, I will have it disconnected.

Yes it is to let you know your alarm is set but for some it's to show off they have an alarm like it's some big deal beep, beep, look at me.
