Generally, I have noticed the cars that have the horn signal alarm are nothing to show off.

I am curious to know if the horn honk alarm can be activated or silenced by the owner.

Most of the time if you hold the lock and unlock buttons at the sametime for a few seconds it will disarm the 'horn' notification.

The only reason I keep my on is becuase I don't have a 'true' alarm. My keyfob is just there to lock my doors and that's it. So if one of my doors isn't shut all the way, all I get is flashing lights, no horn. But if I have all my doors shut then I get the horn and flashing lights. So the horn confirms that all my doors are securely shut. If I disarmed the horn, then there would be no way of me knowing.

In my old honda, I had a true alarm, so when I went to press the button to lock my doors and not one of them was properly shut, then my horn would go beserck until I checked all the doors. But there was no option to turn the 'horn' notification off completely. It was either have the horn blow when I lock AND unlock my doors. Or just have it blow when I lock my doors.

I believe it is an option with all car alarm systems, greggd.

However, the method varies depending on the manufacturer.

i still don't understand why the manufacturers of these alarms wouldn't use a low noise "chirp" sound in place of a loud horn sound. are you able to lock your doors manually by pressing the master "lock" button found on the drivers' door? if so, i just wish that ppl would be more considerate of the other ppl who might be trying to sleep at late hours instead of blowing their horns full blast when it's not necessary.

I like the Toyotas because some of their cars come with the beep/chirp notification.

The only time I lock my doors manually from the drivers door is when I come in REALLY LATE (2am-3am) usually on the weekends. That's when the neighborhood is really quiet. But everybody in our neighborhood has keyless entry with the horns, everybody is used to it.

And yes, those that only provide the horn sound is annoying.

Yeah this is true. it depends on the manufacture. cars that come from the factory with an alarm use the horn method. after market alarm systems use a siren type horn that only chirps when activated.

I think a lot of these are Honda's with the default factory alarm.

Here's the secret for doing it silently:
1. press LOCK once
2. wait 15 seconds
3. now your anti-theft feature is on with no honking

Don't press twice!

All the afteramarket ones are loud that I have had or heard. My honda and toyota ones are really quite but often people check after setting and that beeps the horn.Mostly i thnik it was meant more for locting the vehicle in a parking lot.

My 07 Ram doesn't have an alarm and never did. It blows the horn as soon as you use the key fob to lock the door. Annoying as hell and I can't turn it off. To make matters worse is that it doesn't have a separate key fob, everything is on the key itself so I accidentally hit the lock (horn) many times when just starting the truck if my fingers happen to hit that button.

My Fiesta has that annoying horn go off as well but at least that has a separate key fob and you have to hit the button twice to sound the horn. Base line car, no alarm as well.
