Damn... Shane Van Gisbergen is taking these guys to school. The three time Supercar series champ from New Zealand is running second to Justin Haley with 8 laps to go. He could become the first road course ringer to win a Cup Series race since the late Mark Donohue in 1973.

And he does it! The kiwi wins NASCAR's inaugural street race in the Cup Series. First road course ringer win in 50 years, and the first driver to win in his first start in 60 years. Lone Star JR, Johnny Rutherford, was the last driver to do it.
Shane van Gisbergen. He's a monster in the V8 Supercars Series in Australia. That's the same series Marcos Ambrose came out of. SVG's won 80 Supercars series races and 3 championships.
How many times have we heard the announcers refer to Cup drivers as "...the best race car drivers in the world"? And then they all get beat by a guy in his first time racing in a Cup car. How embarrassing for NASCAR.
Unrelated to that, I sure hope Chicago is a one-time deal. Way too narrow in sections and not enough passing zones. A lot of the race was just a high-speed parade of cars.

I agree!
And FWIW, I read an article, yesterday, on Yahoo Sports, that MANY people in the Chicago area are NOT happy about this race being held. I didn't understand the "politics" of it, but from what I got out of the article, former, controversial, mayor, Lori Lightfoot, put this deal together with NASCAR, and apparently the city wasn't fully on board with it, but she pushed it through, anyway.
If for nothing else, between setting up, tearing down, and running the races, the downtown area of the city must be "upside down" for a good 2 week period, if not longer.........
Seems like this was a popular win, even among the Cup drivers based on some of the interviews I just watched. One thing I only heard mentioned once was thefact he was on 14 lap NEWER tires. Im sure his skill played into it as well, but would/could the newer tires been the main factor?
