Description: One of Atlanta’s first malls (it opened in 1965), North DeKalb Mall, known for a short time as Market Square, was renovated in 1986. Its 650,657 square feet include Macy’s and Burlington. The mall features a food court, a movie theater, and a variety of retailers selling everything from sporting goods to jewelry. To get to the mall from I-285, take the Lawrenceville Highway exit.

Description: Diagonally across Peachtree from Lenox Square, Phipps Plaza is devoted strictly to upscale stores. When it opened in 1969, Phipps was the first two-story mall in the Southeast. A $140 million renovation in 1992 added a three-level wing and Saks Fifth Avenue. Other shops of note include the amazingly modernistic 24,000-square-foot Nike Town, Abercrombie & Fitch, Nordstrom’s, Belk, and Bang & Olufsen of Atlanta. It also includes the only Atlanta locations of Tiffany & Co., Ross-Simons, Gucci, Gianni Versace, A/X Armani Exchange, and Kenneth Cole. The mall also has a 14-screen movie theater, a food court, and five white-tablecloth restaurants.

Description: This “retro mall” takes shoppers back to the days of their youth, when the stores were clustered around the parking lot and sidewalks. It’s a bit dressier than those malls of yesteryear, but the concept’s the same. Pull right up in front of Williams-Sonoma, Seattle’s Best Coffee, or Victoria’s Secret. The 236,000-square-foot project includes landscaped walking paths with benches well away from the traffic.

Description: Discover Mills is a fusion of traditional mall and outlet center. It is 25 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, at the junction of I-85, SR 120, and Sugarloaf Parkway, located in the very heart of one of the fastest-growing suburban areas in the southeastern United States. The major “anchor” stores are not the usual Atlanta mall inhabitants, either: Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, Books-A-Million, Burlington Coat Factory, Last Call from Neiman Marcus, and Off 5th–Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet. A few of the 200 other stores include Bath & Body Works, Bose, Charlotte Russe, Eddie Bauer Outlet, Kenneth Cole New York Outlet, and Mikasa Factory Store.

Description: This 1.2-million-square-foot mall opened in 1984 and expanded in 1993. It has 220 shops and department stores, including Macy’s and Sears. The surrounding streets are a favorite stop for car buyers: Most of the major car makers have dealerships in this area, mostly clustered around Satellite Boulevard behind the mall.

Description: Opened in 2006 in DeKalb County’s southeast corner, Stonecrest’s more than 1.2 million square feet of retail space includes Sears, Macy’s, and Dillard’s department store anchors, about 130 national chain retail shops, a food court, and a multi-screen cinema. Target, Best Buy, Home Depot, and other “big box” stores are on the mall’s peripheries. The mall is about 25 miles east of downtown Atlanta and is the hub of a thriving area of subdivisions, condos, and apartments.

Description: Opened in 1999, the metro area’s super-mall stretches out over 1.7 million square feet. Inside, the wings are decorated in the style of various state regions, i.e., the Magnolia lowlands and the north Georgia mountains. In between are JCPenney, Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Dillard’s. A movie and IMAX theater, an outdoor performing stage, and several smaller shops are lined along a Main Street setting on the edge of the property. Several upscale restaurants and a fast-food court provide a range of nourishment for hungry shoppers.

Description: Opened in 1993, the 1.4-million-square-foot North Point features JCPenney, Dillard’s, Macy’s, and Sears. Nearly 200 specialty retailers, including Bath & Body Works, Ann Taylor, L’Occitane, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Pottery Barn offer a variety of goods to the mall’s affluent clientele. North Point has a full-service customer service facility with an intercom/phone system attached to all freestanding mall directories, fax and photocopy services, and stroller and wheelchair availability. The mall provides a nursing lounge for mothers who care for privacy. The food court has 15 restaurants and an outdoor patio. In a huge glass atrium beside the food court, a 30-foot-high carousel accommodates 38 riders; rides cost $1 per person.
