Description: TULA is at the end of the Bennett Street antiques shopping district (left off Peachtree Road just north of Piedmont Hospital). A privately developed, multiuse arts center, it houses several galleries and over 30 artists’ studios, and arts-related businesses. TULA is home to IMAGE Film/Video Center, (404) 352-4225, which promotes the cinematic arts and exhibits lots of offbeat and experimental movies. Galleries at TULA include Kiang Gallery, (404) 351-5477, and Opus One Gallery, (404) 352-9727. Hours for the galleries in the complex vary, but are generally 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Description: In business since 1981, this two-story, 7,500-square-foot gallery features artists who push the envelope when it comes to contemporary painting, sculpture, and photography. The company represents over 70 artists, both established and up and coming. It is open Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Description: Operated by the city’s Bureau of Cultural Affairs, the 6,000-square-foot City Gallery East is on the first floor of the City Hall East government building. Built by Sears, Roebuck & Co., the massive redbrick structure opened in 1926 and was the retailer’s Southeast catalog order center for decades. Directly across the street, the Atlanta Crackers baseball team used to play in a now-demolished stadium. (This was back in the days before major-league ball came to town.) The gallery presents five major exhibitions each year spotlighting contemporary visual art. Atlanta artists are a special focus, but the gallery does not exclude the works of other U.S. and international artists.

Description: Fay Gold taught art privately prior to opening her gallery in 1980. She changed the gallery scene in Atlanta almost singlehandedly by bringing in New York artists and others who could command top dollar for their goods. Now located in a 7,000-square-foot space designed by her architect son in the heart of Buckhead, she continues to house solo exhibitions and group shows of some of the biggest names in the art world—Dale Chihuly, Tony Hernandez, John Okulick, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Horst P. Horst, to name just a few. Periodically, the work of local artists is also exhibited. It is open by appointment only.

Description: The Signature Shop & Gallery was the creation of Blanche Reeves, who was the first in Atlanta to give fine crafts (weavings, pottery, furniture, and jewelry) a showcase. Because the Signature Shop educated patrons to the art of glass, galleries such as the Vespermann were more accepted into the local art scene. Many local artists got their starts in this modest space more than 35 years ago.
