Description: The Atlanta institute is one of seven U.S. locations of the Munich-based Goethe-Institut that was created in 1951 to promote the German language and intercultural exchanges. It is supported by the German government. Goethe-Institut Atlanta offers German language courses at levels from beginning through advanced. Its library, containing more than 10,000 volumes, is free and open to the public. The Institut’s programs include art exhibits, films, lectures, and performances. Many special events are free, and visitors enjoy free parking in the Colony Square garage. The Institut also organizes language courses in Germany. Description: In 1980, a group of business and academic leaders formed the Japan-America Society of Georgia to increase knowledge among Georgians about Japanese culture; today it has more than 1,000 members. The society sponsors many programs throughout the year to enhance Georgians’ understanding of Japan’s customs and people and to provide Japanese visitors with an opportunity to make friends with Georgians. JapanFest, held each autumn, is a series of entertainment and educational events. Classes in Japanese arts, such as flower arranging and lantern making, are scheduled throughout the year. In 1990 the Society hosted a dinner for Toshiki Kaifu on the occasion of the first-ever visit to the South by a Japanese prime minister.
