... Consequently you are paying MUCH LESS for gas than you would have been if it was purely a free market issue, since all our cars would have 20-25 mpg. We’d have a higher deficit because we’d be importing so much more oil, AND a much more polluted country.
My 50 mpg vehicle arrived in USA under a Republican President (1975)
I still gets 50 mpg (on free home brew fuel). You can grow your own feedstock, used discarded fuel and oil products, or waste veggie oil (Which is sold to China and comes back to USA as Lip-stick / cosmetics), or figure out how to use Algae as a feedstock, as Sustainable Aviation Fuel is doing (plenty of algae in your PNW we_tside gutters). Emissions from organic feedstocks are reduced by 80% over the use of dino feedstock. And of course we (evil diesel drivers) use about 1/2 the fuel of the gas (ick) vehicles. (~80mpg hyper miling recard set by a HEAVY Passat)

Been doing that for 46 yrs... Still works fine.
Even my worst condition evil VW diesel (550,000miles) registered "Zero detectable emissions" on the WA DOEcol Dynos.

This is highly commendable. Probably 98% of people wouldn’t be able to do this, but rest assured that commercial activity, which most people can make use of, is also using biogas and other unconventional sources of energy. What we are seeing now is government taking action to transition all of society towards lower emissions, similar to what has happened in Europe and hopefully will continue.

I drove 30% less ever since the war, and kept the same habits until now. I really don't want to pay 46 cents extra when it comes. The folks in small towns will get it the worst since they don't have public transportation to switch to.

Are you ready or not? This will be permanently be very bad for average people. There's no waiting of what if the gas prices go down, this is tax that is fixed into the price.
Just in time to suck up the SS increase.

If urban or suburban..... Gubmit could incentize....

1) Crush and recycle the Prius that is used 20 min / day, replace with bike, walking, or public transit.

2) Tax the urban road use like cities around the world that have CBD fees (central business districts)

3) Raise car registration fees to $50k+

4) cap the registrations to reduce personal vehicle ownership.

Painful but effective in countries who desire to limit vehicles.
Very easy to reach emission goals tomorrow. No CARB or EV mandates needed.

^We use the Prius just 60 miles/mn. Pretty steady use after 4 yrs here in the flats of Redmond. Longer trips, Kirkland @3mi (one-way) is done by public transit-cheaper. Car insurance (admin+risk) is costing us $1/mi .
No-one, is gonna touch DW's Prius unless they pry off her "cold-dead-hands" from the steering wheel.

I have an Ebike and have amp-hr anxiety, but only if I do too many hills; Also haven't figured out how do the 3 miles to Kirkland safely. But I can do Udub, Woodinville, Issaquah on bike-walk paths.
Fred Meyer & HomeDepot is a 15 min walk as is Regal theaters. Which takes care of most of my wants.
Condo living is great.

Asinine.
I kind of think a state income tax is in the works again.

With Washington's mandate that only EV to be sold by 2035, so what will the next step be. Increase lost revenue of the lost gas taxes. Will it be a super high tab renewal fee or a state income tax?
Of course it will.
Right now the tab tax on EV is $100 dollars above a non-EV car. Even a Hybrid is $50 higher. Expect the government tab tax to go thru the roof as more and more EV are on the road.

Tab and weight Fees were capped by voter initiative.
Did you not vote for I-976?

https://www.king5.com/article/news/l...2-7adabc18865e

(of course the WA Supreme Ct had their say)
"CAR TAB CONTROVERSY
Voter-approved Initiative 976 to lower car tabs unconstitutional, state supreme court rules"
