I'm glad I only have to work in the office twice a week, since my F150 5.0 V8 gets about 19mpg on that trip. Gas prices are definitely a nuisance but not a big deal for us. Driving to Seattle 3 less days a week we are still coming out ahead, and that will still apply with the additional tax. I actually did take the bus for several years pre-Covid but with the crime and homeless issues in Seattle being so much worse I'd rather pay for the gas.

In Wenatchee, the current gas price at the CHEAP Exxon station is $4.79.

There was a Wall Street Journal article today that the carbon price off-set markets are running out of timberlands for carbon offsets.

That means that when the Carbon Price Market goes into effect in Washington next January 1st the increase in gas taxes will easily meet the 50 cent a gallon threshold. Right now, it will probably EXCEED that threshold.

At the end of January, at a MINIMUM your looking at unleaded gas prices at $5.30 a gallon. There is a good chance that the new floor for gas prices will be $5.30 a gallon.

The good news is that if the recession is pretty bad, and it is headed in that direction the lack of jobs and income will drop the gas price BELOW the $5.30 threshold.

In Feb. if gas prices are OVER $6.00 a gallon, we won't be in recession. If they are UNDER 5.30 gallon we are in recession.

Hmmm, I think most of the people are in bad shape no matter what happens.

The worst will be in small towns and jobs or doctors offices, grocery stores are 20 + miles away. If gas is still where it is now, plus 46 cents, most of wa state will be over 5 a gallon. Groceries and restaurants will cost more due to higher cost of transport of goods. Some People living in suburbs will have issues paying their mortgage or rents due to extra gas costs.

I will definitely take public transportation more often if it goes up to 5 a gallon.

The larger initiative is to keep moving towards electric and chargeable hybrids. There is a huge push to add solar, renewables, batteries, and now hydrogen. Taxing fossil fuels to help fund the infrastructure build will speed up the transition, which we need in order to reduce the harmful effects of climate change.

While not pleasant, raising the price of gas will also reduce consumption, and thus reduce emissions. Those who can afford it will switch to electric, I personally and hoping to have either a chargeable hybrid or a car with a hydrogen based component. That’s still some years out.

Which means....buy less gas, drive less.

Not for the working class (which includes the so-called middle-class) because they are, for lack of a better word, slaves to their cars.

They have to drive to work and back....that can be a lot of miles and therefore petrol payments.

Those who can afford it....I love this part.

Those who can afford it....higher income earners....may not even switch.

People should be attracted to or drawn into electric cars....not punished into them.

Remember the documentary "who killed the electric car?"

It's on Youtube.

I agree that people should be attracted into and not punished into electric cars. Some of that is happening.

But we are running out of time and government’s role is to see the bigger picture and make the changes needed to protect our future. The free market isn’t up to the job because future financial pain isn’t priced into current gas prices. Nor are current environmental costs.

We will see if they get it right or wrong but the inaction of the last 50 years now means that we need to take strong action to catch up. That means financial difficulties.

Related, the Democratic Party has (thankfully) not left it to the free market to decide what fuel efficiency standards are, today, either. Consequently you are paying MUCH LESS for gas than you would have been if it was purely a free market issue, since all our cars would have 20-25 mpg. We’d have a higher deficit because we’d be importing so much more oil, AND a much more polluted country.

The Democrats should just get Jimmy Carter's gasoline ration coupons out of storage.

Carter's proposal was that every license driver gets a 10 gallon a week allowance. Don't use the ration coupon you can sell it.

Nope, the Democrats want HIGH PRICES so their rich supporters do NOT have to drive 55 MPH, or turn in a ration coupon to get gas.

They can just ignore the rabble as they speed at 80 mph to their other homes in Lake Chelan and fly to Cabo in the winter.

Oil companies, auto industry (such as GM) and the government all in it together for:

$$$$$

That was the inaction.

We will be entering into a recession by all predictions by January 2023. This likely will quickly bring gas prices down. So this temporary increase is short term. Patience. Some are predicting a 30 percent drop.
