Despite the higher tax, gas prices are still higher in the Metro Seattle area because of higher rent, or just charging what the market will bear. We filled up at Redmond Costco Saturday morning for $4.69, and drove to Sequim for the weekend. On the way back we still had over half a tank, but filled up anyway because the Costco there was only $4.39.

Despite the higher tax and prices we are driving more than ever this spring/summer, with a 300+ road trip every weekend since late April, checking out state parks and other camping areas for future trips with our trailer. Traffic on weekend up and down I5 seems worse than pre-Covid, with many TVs and trailers in the mix. It's definitely not working if the higher tax is meant to cut down on driving!

I'm on business in the DC area right now and gas is 3.20/gal. Kinda crazy WA is higher than DC which is normally associated with high COL.

While at the airport I was given a free upgrade and decided to try an EV. The thing gets close to 300 miles on a single charge and the rental company doesn't require recharging. Just bring it back when done That's pretty cool when in a rush to catch a flight while dropping off the car. Just recharge if needed. In my I don't think I'll need to.

The EV as a rental car is much more appropriate us for them as long as they are not charged for bringing it back without a full charge. Most travelers in a city for a short time would not have to recharge at all so they will save time and money. Eventually though, I would bet that they will start see the potential revenue and have fines for not bringing it back full. Then it will become more inconvenient then an ICE, if you have to sit and charge it somewhere close to the airport before returning it.

That's exactly why I asked prior to renting it. I would not have selected the EV if recharging was required. With most needing to catch a flight, it's a big advantage. In addition, the place where I have meetings also have a charging station in the parking lot which is pretty convenient.

....
Are you renting / buying gas in neighboring VA or MD?

DC is a CARB state. (Unfortunately). East coast usually use Gulf coast refineries, so much cheaper than the highly regulated and costly left coast refineries.

Gas (ick) tax?
Brew your own fuel... BTDT since 1976, no dinosaurs or toxic batteries (or vehicle modifications) necessary. Personally saved over 10,000 gallons for the SUV hogs. (Maybe 5 minutes worth of hog use in USA), or 1 min of jet fuel emissions.). Better ban our 50+ mpg alternative fueled cars with 80% emission reductions. It's been nice driving a week in my eurocar before considering a fuel stop. (Diesel 6spd). 3.5l per 100km. Euro biodiesel is excellent (rapeseed) 100% allowed, USA is garbage. (Soy) 5% max allowed.
