Traveling and Settling..I have experienced exactly what you have in Western Washington..it has been extremely hard to make friends, very isolating, and I was mobbed at work.. but this happened with locals AND transplants! But overall, for me this is a better place to live. I am finally making friends after 3 years. I have had to learn a lot and I am still learning. My signon name reps where I came from and while I miss the familiarity, I am not going back.

I live in a small town in Western WA and have had good vibes from the locals! I've been here two winters now, hailing from a rural S. California unincorporated town of 52,000. I've found the people to be much friendlier here then in my former home of 20+ years. I've had no problem making friends here. I should add that I'm a bit of a reclusive, not outgoing at all. The advantage living in the area I do is the summer tourists and sport fishing crowd which add a nice touch of spice to the area. Perhaps you need to try a different small western WA town near a tourist draw with a less homogeneous population.

The Curse of Bellingham Washington, Seattle Freeze, Antisocial, Dateless, Unfriendly People, No Social Life

The "Curse of Bellingham" Washington

A dissertation on the most anti-social place in the world

By Winston Wu

“Once you’ve lived in Bellingham, when you leave it, circumstances bring you back”

- The Bellingham curse as described to me by long-time residents

“Bellingham is like a black hole, drawing people in and sucking back those who try to get away”

- How I would describe Bellingham and its alleged curse

“The only constants in Bellingham are boredom, loneliness, and anti-sociality. It is the only place I know of where flirting is vilified as a crime to the female population.”

- Me again

Strangely enough, Western Washington is mostly quite redneck and very REpublican/Libertarian. Even if that number is 30-40% , demographically Western Washington votes Red.. Those few liberal counties have all the people.

Hmmmm could it be you? I live in a small town in SW WA, ran to three stores today too 4hrs. Everyone was chatty & Friday. We had out dogs w us, started at farmers market - one lady wanted her dog to meet our dog, two others wanted to let our dogs, one other had many questions about one of the dogs, another lady's dog recently died & she so badly just wanted to pet a dog again. Each one of these folks stayed to chat about the dogs, weather, and often wanted to simply tell us a story about one of their pets. We headed to Lowes. One lady & her adult daughter wanted to know about their breeds, tell us about the use they adopted & talk about plants. Another lady stopped us for over half hour - she also had two dogs that are same breed as one of ours, she told us about her dogs, asked a ton of question s about dog things in the area (she is pretty new here), asked about training & keeping them active... Last stop was Wilco, didn't take dogs inside, two people stopped to mention plants for the garden, another just commented about weather.

Last time I was at Walmart, a random lady smiles at me & said "God bless you", no reason, just a passing comment.

So I wouldn't say we are not friendly.

Bye eastern wa is more GOP than western WA. More of western wa is more libertarian or independent.

Redneck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I personally think that "rainneck" is technically more appropriate.

BS... Only non-rednecks would think redneck is a derogatory term for poor Southern white farmers.. Haaa.. Trust me, I grew up in Oregon and everyone proudly proclaimed themselves as a "REDNECK". The term Redneck certainly has a much broader meaning that what the boneheads who created the wikipedia article could understand.. Perhaps, it would help those so-called geniuses to leave their university office in New Jersey once in a while and see what is happening in the rest of the country. I'm not knocking all wiki articles, but that one has got to be the most naive I ever read.

The modern term for redneck is not necessarily synonymous to whatever historical origins were used for the term.

Now, take a trip to Sedro-Woolley and tell them how they are not rednecks.. You are likely to start a brawl real quickly..

I agree that stupid citation on Wikipedia, especially the introduction, is ridiculously biased and probably written by some liberal city-slicker. Notice that the only mention of the modern use of the word in that entire article, is two sentences about country music and Jeff Foxworthy - despite the fact that the term "redneck" has never been used as much as it is used today. It has become part of pop culture. Things like this are exactly why Wikipedia will never be a reputable reference source.

Whatever the reason that the term "redneck" was originally coined, it has most certainly become a badge of honor in this day-and-age. Mostly because people who define themselves as "rednecks" are proud that they are not liberal city-slickers.
