It kinda is, honestly. I rarely hear about San Antonio in real life like I do about the other DFW cities, Houston or Austin. I hear it about it but not too much. If I lived closer to SA maybe it'd be different.

San Antonio is an underrated city in Texas.

How many Texans even know that in regards to the incorporated city boundaries, SA is the second most populous in Texas?

I agree that San Antone is underrated. It is my favorite city in the state.I knew that San Antone was the second most populous texas city.I may be more familiar with the city than many Texans because my grandmother grew up in the area, have taken family vacations there, still have family in the area, and I go through there at least twice a year.

Underrated in what way? SA is constantly on the list of fastest growing cities. This year is no exception, as it ranked 3rd fastest in the nation.

Is San Antonio less developed than the other Texas cities or what is going on?

SanAntonio is #25, so way down the list.

Austin is only #35, but IT IS 'Little SanFranciso' , so it gets an inordinate amount of attention
Basically This ^

I think San Antonio has always gotten less recognition than Dallas and Houston, but it was still the clear #3 city in Texas. Then little brother Austin grew up to be really charming and cool, and basically pushed San Antonio aside. In terms of non-Texans' perceptions of the state I'd say Austin is now the most popular city in Texas nationwide. I've known multiple out-of-state residents who would jump at the chance to visit Austin but immediately shut down any suggestion that other cities in Texas might also be worth a visit. The thing is Dallas and Houston are both such alpha cities economically that even a great deal of bad press doesn't stop them from being culturally relevant. San Antonio on the other hand doesn't seem to have found an effective way to compete with Austin.

San Antonio actually is a nice place for tourism. I wonder if those tourists just don't spread the word about the city as much as Austin tourists seem to when they return to where they're from. Or maybe the lion's share of San Antonio's tourists come from other parts of Texas rather than from other states, so the spreading of the word only goes so far?? Who knows?

When I lived in Austin, from 1980 to 2000, the first thing we would do with out-of-town visitors is take them to San Antonio.
