Thanks everyone for all the info and advice. And when it comes to trash talking I'm a Stone Cold Steve Austin fan so I enjoy it. But again I would like to say thanks for all the feed back.

I ran this by my husband, who is an oil and gas consultant and who has worked in hiring and management positions in the oil field (and natural gas) for over three decades, because I was surprised to hear this. He said absolutely not with any companies he's familiar with.

I am not trying to get into a he said/she said thing with you, just letting the OP know that the information about an associate's degree being necessary isn't the case across the board, maybe just with some companies.

I work in oil, but in a big-city office, not in the field. So, I'm not sure I can give the OP any useful advice ... and in any case, I think you guys have already done well in that. I just wanted to respond to the comments about how people talk in the oil field. In the 80s, I remember seeing bumper stickers that said something like "Please don't tell my mom I work in the oil field, she thinks I'm a piano player in a whorehouse".

I still smile when I remember that!

LOL one time my husband accidentally left his phone on and put it in his pocket. Now listen, at home that man literally never cussed. But he was cussing a blue streak over the phone! It took me a second or two to realize it was even him!

If it was me I'd try to get in on the refinery maintenance side which means mostly along the coast, somewhere from western Mississippi(Pascagoula) down to Corpus Christi, Tx. This area is almost solid oil and gas refining. Get your foot in the door. Also might get introduced to the offshore industry which is where the exploration money is.

My husband always used to say "What we need here is less PhD and more OJE." (On the Job Experience.)

He didn't have a PhD but he did have some sort of degree from somewhere.

That's funny, I spent 8 yrs in refinery environments, but as a white collar worker who would walk the site every day and interact with the construction workers. Same goes for that as well... I got ribbed many times but I prefer that to office work.

BTW if you're 5'8 123 some of those tough guys are going to LOVE you. A lot of them work 60-70 hrs/wk and then go out drinking with their boys because they would rather be around their sweaty friends instead of going home to a woman every night.
