Hi there, my husband will be teaching for a year at SU, so we're looking to rent somewhere with our 3 young kids (pre K-elementary age). Right now our best housing choices are pretty diverse, so I was hoping for any insights from people who know about real life in these areas. Our choices are a modest house in the city (Ed Smith school) with diversity and proximity to the University, a beautiful farmhouse in Skaneateles (Waterman elementary) that's more of a commute, or a family house in Lysander/baldwinsville which we know less about...All are roughly the same price. Any thoughts for our 1-year adventure? Thanks!!
If it for one year, I'd go with the house in the city. I'm not sure if the other two districts have Pre-K either. Is the city home right by Ed Smith School or is it in another neighborhood zoned for the school?
Thanks for replying! It's near Barry park, zoned for Ed Smith..I was leaning in that direction because it just seems easier to be closer to SU and we like having some diversity, but now the landlord seems inflexible about the start date, so I don't know. I just spotted something in Solvay but don't know much about that area at all.

What is your budget?
Solvay is generally alright, but it is on the other side of town. With that said, it isn't that far away. I would consider the other 2 before it though.
I would say to look into the eastern suburban SD's of Jamesville-Dewitt and Fayetteville-Manlius or to look into the western suburban/town school districts like Westhill, West Genesee or even Marcellus and Skaneateles. There are others, but those are some of the more highly regarded school districts in the area.
All 3 are in the town of DeWitt just east of Syracuse.
If you don't mind sectarian private schools, Most Holy Rosary(in the Strathmore neighborhood), Blessed Sacrament(in Eastwood), Faith Heritage(a Pre K-12 school in the Valley neighborhood), Our Lady of Pompeii(in the inner North Side) and All saints of Tipperary Hill(an outer West Side neighborhood) are some within the city that cover the elementary grades. As mentioned, there are others within and just outside of city limits.

Given that you mentioned gifted and talented education as an aspect of your search, Emmabear23, here is a Gifted and talented source for the region that mentions a couple of those private schools that are bolded: https://cnygifted.com/education/
Lafayette is a solid/good SD, that is known for having a high Native American(largely Onondaga) student population. It is a more rural area, but it is about a 10-15 minute drive into Syracuse and it has some newer homes. Good area if you want a lot of land and like the scenery of the hills and valleys in that area.
Unfortunately, St. Margaret's in Mattydale just closed after the 2020-2021 school year.

Where did you end up going? How did it work out for you. Now, I'm in your shoes.
^Unfortunately, the last time they were on here was 2015, but besides the school aspect, is there anything else you are looking for in a neighborhood or community?
If you are open to the suburbs, I would say to look at zones like the one for Moses DeWitt Elementary in the Jamesville-DeWitt SD or the zone for say Long Branch Elementary in the Liverpool SD for a couple of examples with some cultural diversity and are generally solid/good schools.
Also, given that you are considering other areas in Upstate NY, here are some other suburban elementary schools with some of the diversity that you are looking for: https://www.city-data.com/forum/new-...tate-ny-5.html
