The Pope has just said the use of condoms is acceptable in some circumstances: for gay men to prevent the spread of HIV.
What do you think about this radical change of opinion by the Catholic Church?
HIV is spread by more heterosexuals than by gay men. Look at Africa where it started and it is still killing many today. Also, HIV is spread by many who do drugs with needles. The Pope needs some education on this matter.
Considering that worldwide, HIV is mostly spread by heterosexuals it's a rather ignorant opinion.
Worldwide, most of the people with HIV and AIDS are heterosexuals. But in North America, Western Europe and other developed nations, most cases continue to be transmitted sexually between men. In the United States, according to a recent report, most cases of recent HIV infection continue to be among gay men.
Let's not make more out of the Pope's pronouncement than it is. It's a small step, but a step nonetheless. However, it needs to go much further. It reminds me of a quote I read from one of the old-time movie moguls: "Let's bring this picture up to date with some snappy sixteenth-century dialogue".

While I consider the pope and the Catholic Church largely corrupt and irrelevant . . . this is hardly a radical change. The primary concern over condom use is contraception. There is no possibility of conception from male on male sex . . . condoms or not. So there's nothing to prohibit from their point of view.
