The best thing is that you won’t have to deal with trashy people that have come to dominate NYC if you don’t want to.
After the 2008 housing crash, a friend of mine wanted to buy some properties in the Poconos as an investment, because they were so cheap at that point. I went to look with him. A lot of the properties were vandalized. A few had the copper plumbing stripped out. I remember going into the garage of one house, and finding a big Latin Kings crown graffitied on the wall.

So, yeah.
monroe county has huge drug and gang issues.
google poconos and drugs or gangs . it’s out of control
While true you can avoid in many areas o the country. We also have a special breed of trashy in NYC lately. Maybe entitled and arrogant are better descriptors.

Cheap RE relative to the state median is usually not a good sign with regard to QOL.
the poconos are not cheap in decent developments ..our old house is up around 400k .
it had fallen from 235k when we sold in 2012 to about 185k in 2015 or so.
today 375k- 400k . but we are a pretty high end area being just about on lake wallenpaupack.
it’s the boating mecca with 50 miles of shoreline.
a far cry from what monroe county turned in to .
we were on the borderline between pike and wayne . as far as my opinion , monroe county is the toilet of the poconos
