Here in central Texas, the HEB stores dominate - we have no real alternatives like Kroger, Food Lion, etc. so I am not familiar with Publix.
Would someone give me a brief run-down on the store and whether it's a good place for me to plan to shop when I move to the NMB area next year? Thanks!
Although I have not been to Texas and into H-E-B, I am quite familiar with Texas' dominant supermarket chain.
Publix is a privately held, employee owned company operating 1,093 stores as of Wednesday, 19 November. Focus on customer service, necessities, quality products and low prices is standard throughout Publix. Publix's delicatessen is known for sub sandwiches. Publix's pharmacy, nearing 1,000 locations, is known for free antibiotic and other category prescribed drugs and constant customer satisfaction.

We have a Publix within walking distance of our condo in Naples FL. I like it. I see it as similar to Lowes Foods. However, like Lowes, the prices are higher than Walmart for the most part so I usually end up there.
My all time favorite chain is ShopRite. That is my goto food store in NJ........
CK...thank you for this info - sounds like a place I will love! It will be nice to have choices

We just got a Publix by us in NC and it is always busy. It is a very nice store and directly across the street from a Harris Teeter. Around here, HT is king. Publix moving in definitely changes things, especially as Lowe's Foods continue to close stores. Based on the shopping I've done down there, Publix is a nicer store than most available but you pay for it. Sale prices are fantastic but regular pricing is high, like Harris Teeter. Having said that, the area could use a higher end grocery store so I am glad for the opening. Our condo is in Barefoot so we usually just hit the Bi-Lo and then the Fresh Market or Kroger for things Bi-Lo doesn't carry.
Publix Acquired Surfside Beach Commons in Surfside Beach, South Carolina
Publix will change the competition with Bi-Lo, Food Lion, Kroger, Lowe's Foods and Walmart present. Some chains will remain, and other chains will close their doors.
Publix's third store in the Myrtle Beach area may be in Surfside Beach. It purchased Surfside Beach Commons last November from Columbia Regency Partners II LLC. Surfside Beach Commons is anchored by Bi-Lo #5104, 1610 Highway 17 South, Surfside Beach, South Carolina 29575-6037. I would not be surprised to see Bi-Lo #5104 close in the near future to make way for Publix.
