Yes,. it was called The Pub. They served the most delicious filet mignon in town grilled on 3 brick wood fired fireplace grills. The place was dark and romantic, but the horrible 1/4 wedge of iceberg lettuce was flavorless, except when drowned in bleu cheeze dressing. Desserts were good. The place failed and died a horrible death when the owner burned it to the ground approaching bankruptcy. He was eventually convicted of arson. The shell remained dormant for years and was taken over by a string of cuban restaurants none of which have been any good and the present one is so filthy in the kitchen that the rats in the area eat at McDonalds. Beware of Chinese and Cuban Restaurants, its a toss up as to which ones are the filthiest in Miami.

I was reminiscing tonight on the phone with a friend of mine (we both grew up in Miami), and I cannot remember that restaurant's name. It was in the same era as Monk's Inn, which of course was also on Coral Way (same period as the old Studio restaurant). Does anyone remember the restaurant I'm referring to?
The Monks Inn was a local delight for years. Decorated as an old monastery and the wait staff wearing brown hooded robes, they served you hard monks rolls with a dollop of cream cheese, an apple and a few wedges of select cheese as the table appetizer. The by the glass wines were excellent as were the bottles. Salad was hand made in a huge bowl and served table-side. Mini lunch was a hit with local executives, the cheese appetizer, salad and a glass of wine for $5.95 was a deal. My favorite was the chopped sirloin steak with sauteed green beans, and potatoes of the day was awesome at $9.95. Paulette was a delightful European Lady who owned and ran the place. As the character of the area changed into a more trashy latin low budget, she gave up in disgust and left the area and reopened in Orlando. Not sure how long she lasted there, but this was a major loss to this area, a lovely place with atmosphere and superior food.

You forgot Arbetters Hot Dogs, 89th and Bird. Now in its 3rd generation of ownership this is the premium hotdog stand in the world. They serve a traditionally boiled hotdog with mustard and kraut, and will scowl at you if you ask for catsup. Crispy fries, and cold drinks. Nothing special, but always the same, and great. Ive been eating hot dogs there since I was 12 years old and am 60 now. Try it, clean, cheep, wonderful.

Anybody remembers Franco's Pizza? Their commercials were all around, and Cozzoli, Italian pizza. They brought the "pizzaiolos" straight from Sicily.

There was a Spanish restaurant around 8 and 27 sw, Casa Castilla, magnificent. Coral Way was a former Greek neighborhood, I vaguely remember there were Greek restaurants.
Wasn't it Big Daddy's???...right there on 37th Ave and Coral Way?...across from what is now Ross??
That brings memories...used to catch the bus right there at that bus stop...mid 70's.

Haven't been on here for ages and noticed this thread pop up tonight. Rob222, you sure have a great memory about the Pub. Funny how we both remember the iceberg lettuce wedge! It made me think how trends have changed. Nowadays if an iceberg lettuce wedge were to be served some would be appalled when the trends today are such things as arugula and baby greens. Was just thinking about the wonderful dessert bar at the Studio, and that huge, deep bowl of chocolate mousse. As a kid I ladled it over the piece of cheesecake also at the dessert bar. What a treat!

Read tonight on Facebook that Fox's Sherron Inn is a goner too. Is Pumpernick's still around? And Marhsall Major's is gone too, right?

Great list, ray1945. I wondered about another restaurant I used to go to on Commodore Plaza. It was called Kaleidoscope. I guess that's gone too. Another place I know closed down that was a great place to stop on the way home from the beach was Sunday's on the Bay in Key Biscayne. Did it become another club after that?
