Could you picture the insanity during rush hour if they ever implemented this???? You would have people who have no clue what they're doing holding everyone else up (similar to the jerks who use self checkout and don't know how to use it)
Right you'd have people pole vaulting over the gates at the really crowded station on the way home. (Ronkonkoma, Babylon, Hicksville, Huntington, Deer Park)

People know how to use the swipe cards for the subway. Some of those people are even LIRR users too.
I'm a conductor. We do not make 239 grand. One guy did a few years ago and he earned it by working 7 days a week and picking the longest shifts he possibly could every day. Why that bothers people I don't know. The guy was working weekends holiday, every day of his life so whats the problem? He killed himslef to do that. MOst of us make just enough to get by in NY. There are very few guys making those crazy salaries.
As for conductors not wanting machines or gates, they will still need us because we have many other responsibilities besides punching tickets. Maybe u should know what your talkng about before posting this stuff.

At least 1 qualified Conductor (by Federal Law) and 1 Brakeman (by LIRR rules) must be on the train in addition to the engineer. Now they are times when these can be consolidated, but 99% of the trains need at least 2 qualified people present. One can not just hire John Doe off the street to do this.
Qualification starts by knowing the rules of the RR and all the physical layouts (every switch, signal) from memory for Montauk thru Penn Station.

For all of the people that carry smart phones today why not create an app that acts like my cars smart tag. You pass a gate it registers your account and if the conductor asks for a ticket the screen shows a valid ticket. Geico has this now for proving you have valid insurance.
When you depart the train a transponder registers your unit and you are billed accordingly. Like the NJ Turnpike when you lose your ticket you pay the whole route. If you don't enter/exit the train correctly you are charged the max amount.

What standarized chip in smart phones are you using? Unless you mean Wi-Fi.
Where are you putting in all these receivers? Most of stations as you get further away from NYC have a numerous ways to exit, some of which exit directly to streets.

Nice idea, very hard to implement
Just like on the thruway if your using an EZ Pass you must enter/exit through a Toll Booth. If you fail to scan out upon arriving at your destination then they bill you for the entire length of that run. Good incentive to select the correct exit option. For scanning I am thinking wifi because it's easy to register and provides a unique identifier for each user.
