I'm about to interview for a job that requires 2-3 days/week commute into Hauppauge, Long Island. I'm told that I need a car because the LIRR is too far away from the office in L.I. I've only lived in downtown Brooklyn for a little over 1 year so I'm really not familiar with the LIE and what the commute would be like - other than the woman said it's about a 45 minute drive, and when I looked up directions it looks more like 1 hour, but up to 1 hr 45 minutes with traffic.
So, is there alot of rush hour traffic heading from Brooklyn into Long Island in the mornings? And vice versa heading from Long Island back to Brooklyn during the 5:00 rush hour? Thanks!

The woman is lying unless you're driving at 3 in the morning.
Your commute home would be terrible. Morning wouldn't be awful, but still approaching an hour. Afternoon would be well over an hour.
I have a friend who commuted to Western Nassau from Park Slope and his commute home was over an hour.
..and when it rains, add another half hour, if it snows, add 2 hours. 2 days a week..maybe..3 days a week...I hope you like your car.
I think the OP is living closer to the Brooklyn waterfront - it would be too much of a local drive to get to Eastern Pkwy. 278 is right there, but the truck traffic, perpetual construction and potholes would be more than enough to put a real downer to the commute. Strip of LIE to Grand Central is particularly busy at just about all hours of the day.
Sorry, OP is in Downtown Bklyn and Dman mentioned Parkslope, I got turned around.
His options are limited over there. 278 sucks and Atlantic ave over to the Jackie would take awhile.

Yeah, I was just bringing it up for comparisons sake. My friend lived in Park Slope and worked in Roslyn
The OP lives downtown but is talking about working in Hauppauge....even further than my friends commute, which was never under an hour. I drove it a few times with him and it was awful. The "reverse" commute is only marginally better than the traditional one.

Did the NW Suffolk to Sunset Park commute for about a year. Not fun at all.

your looking at a 2 hour commute, at least, 1 way. downtown brooklyn to massapequa is an hour and from pequa to haupp, its a good 45 minutes. factor in rush hour, at least 2 and half hours, 1 way.
