Hello, all! This is my first post, although I've been reading this forum for quite some time.

It seems as if my husband will be accepting a job in Long Island very soon. We are looking for a single family home to rent once this school year is over.

He will be commuting from Islandia, but we have family in Nassau and CT so I'd like to not be "too" far out on the island.

We are looking for a family friendly area, as we have both small children still at home and children in elementary school. The school districts are not too much of an issue, as we'd like our children to continue attending Catholic school.

We need to keep our rent under 2500 if possible.

I obviously want somewhere safe, low crime. I prefer areas with a sense of community and maybe a quaint "downtown" area with locally owned shops etc. In other words, I prefer scenery to convenience...tree lined streets and such...less urban feeling.

Also, if anyone knows of an area with an active Catholic Church in the area with a Catholic school affiliated, I'm all ears.

Thank you for reading.

I might check out Babylon and Massapequa maybe Wantagh to the South.
Kings Park, Northport and Huntington to the North.

No shortage of Catholic Churches anywhere on this Island.

Thats true bot not every church has a school. If she lived in Kings Park for example, the school is not at St. Joseph's....same with Northport and St. Philip.

I'd suggest the OP check the diocese of Rockville Center website for a list of schools and you can see whether the parish has its own school or not if that's even important to you. I'm not able to make any recs w/ your budget because I don;t know what rentals go for - sorry.

Depends where in Huntington Station. Some areas are actually very nice ("Tree Streets", Audubon Woods, etc.).

Please clarify your comment before you lead the OP astray...

In Huntington, kids go to St. Patrick's elementary (through 8th grade) - the church is a block or two up the street from the school. After St. Pat's they branch out and go to St. Anthony's in Dix Hills, or Our Lady of Mercy (I think it's still all girls), and there is probably another high school for boys.

Huntington has exactly what you said - that community feel - I find it much friendlier than other LI communities - a nice downtown - very walkable. The neighborhoods around the "village" look like they fell out of a New England town - same type of architecture. I jokingly told someone the other day that with all the snow and how pretty it looks it's like living in a Thomas Kinkade painting.

But rents are rather high here, depending on what you're looking for. There are quite a few rentals in the village area in the older neighborhoods that are more reasonably priced, but be prepared for no perks such as central AC or sprinklers for example - these houses are old and have been very well used as rentals (google Sammis Street, Myrtle Street, Dewey Street, Fairview St., Fairmont St.; or just look at Coldwell Banker's list of house rentals on their website). Those rents will probably be in the $2500/month range. Some are broker owned and they may waive the finder fee as well. At least it's a place to start.

Why are rents so high? Landlords have high carrying costs here, not just in Huntington, but all over LI. Our real estate taxes are through the roof, and then there are the other carrying costs, insurance, a possible mortgage, income taxes on the rent, etc.

You may not end up in Huntington, but it's a good place to start a search being on the border of Suffolk and Nassau counties.

As another poster mentioned before, stay away from Huntington Station, especially if you're to do a rental over the internet and not actually come up here first. And even if you were here for a week, you wouldn't be able to really understand all the nuances of the area. Huntington Station has many problems including robberies, shootings, an elementary school was actually shut down because of violence in the area, and while there are pockets there that are okay, there are many that aren't. If you want safety, that is not the place for you.

While there are plenty of Catholic churches on Lond Island, as has already been pointed out, there are not too many Catholic elementary schools left on Long Island; many have been closed/consolidated for lack of attendance and/or financial reasons. My daughters attended St. Joseph's in Babylon, but that closed quite some time ago.

If you like the parish and school combined, St. Patrick's in Huntington would certainly be one option.

Try Smithtown, Commack, Hauppauge, St. James - all good areas close to Islandia.

I beg to differ.
