Geographically it is. Brooklyn and Queens is technically on the same landmass as Suffolk and Nassau.
Socially and Culturally it is not. When the vast majority of people refer to Long Island, they are referring to Nassau and Suffolk only. Also, Nassau and Suffolk has a completely different lifestyle and quality of life than Queens/Brooklyn for the most part.

They are not boroughs of 'Manhattan', they are boroughs of New York City.
Yes they are part of the same land mass but LI is identified as Nassau/Suffolk counties.
That's a popular identification, however they are Long Island just the same.
Before Queens became heavily populated, as it is now, parts of it were addressed to as: Ozone Park, LI, NY. Jamacia, LI, NY
The LIRR originally ran from Brooklyn to Jamacia, and that was it!
Does anyone else come across people saying that B&Q are NOT PART OF LONG ISLAND?! I mean, B & Q are Long Island as much as Montauk is!
Kings County and Queens County, which are coterminous with the New York City Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, respectively, are, and always have been, part of Long Island.
