We are from Queens and would like to buy a house on Long Island. Everywhere we look the taxes are very high. We have looked at houses in Selden and Centereach and have found some nice houses for the money with OK taxes. I keep hearing conflicting things about the schools there, and not sure who to believe. We also would like to consider Babylon, but hear conflicting stories about that area also. It would be nice to be by the LIRR for an easy commute into the city. Alot of people on here suggest Lynbrook and Mineola. Are there any other towns that you could suggest or shed some light on the above mentioned towns? We are just starting out so we really need something for under 350k, which is very hard, but we have time and can be patient. The schools are a must for us, we have to little ones that we want to go to nice schools.
For aroud $350 you are not going to get a house in Western Nassau County (if you want to have a decent commute to NYC unless you get a co-op or condo. Lynbrook, which has good schools has some co-ops & condos. Mineola has the same but I'm not quite sure about the schools.
In General I would steer clear from ANYTHING where the LIRR routs through Jamaica, it’s a long crowded ride. Living in Nassau county now is the same as Queens 10 years ago plus crazy taxes.
(You will have the same thing you have now in 10 years)
Check Little Neck or the Great Neck Terrace condos at the Little Neck LIRR sta. There is a bird sanctuary behind them no more building over there.
I have a friend who lives in Bellrose he says it isnt bad, cheap taxes and nicer people then the North Shore.

Every single LIRR branch runs through Jamaica except the Port Washington branch.....
I would pick Babylon before Centerreach/Selden.....
I agree Babylon over the other 2.
