I think a lot of us would like to "go back to when and where things were a little better", and I also deplore the loss of far too many of Lexington's historic buildings and the boring, unimaginative, cold concrete structures - and empty lots - which have replaced them.
That said, you can't go home again...we can only go forward and hope to avoid the past's mistakes by learning from them.
I do have some optimism about the immediate future of downtown Lexington just now. There are small but important changes occurring: two new groceries downtown, restoration of beautiful old 19th century storefronts housing small businesses on Main Street, renovation upcoming for Triangle Park...all of these will serve our community well and I'm glad to see them happening.
Now, if we could only turn back time and have the historic buildings lost to the Big Green Block back in place, restored and put to productive use, I think we'd all be in harmony.
Maybe we really do need to be grazing miniature horses there, as a friend suggested today...
