I think that was probably wise. It's just too risky. There will always be another year for PCB.

Being June starts the off season, you shouldn't have any problem finding a place. Do watch the slick still, though. Like you read, the east coast could be in trouble, too.

We're headed to Seagrove Beach in late June...probably will cancel within the next few weeks before our 30 day deadline b/c it looks like the panhandle will be affected. I hate that our vacation will be cancelled (although I'm thinking Colorado may be our backup, we're in Oklahoma so this was a long trip already to Fl). More than that though, my heart breaks for the wildlife there. It just makes me sick to think of what is possibly to come.

It probably won't get any further east, than Pensacola.

Seagrove beach is another 80 miles east of there, I think you'll be fine. But hey, its your decision.

How about St George Island - its a little further East of PC. Very secluded - don't look for any drive through places to eat or mini-golf places there!! Excellent place to propose and spend quality time together. The beaches in the state park are beautiful! Personally, I don't think you are going to see our beaches ruined (PCB or SGI). I wouldn't cancel just yet though moving a little more east might be a good precaution.

We have till May 18th to decide, so we'll wait it out until then and make our decision based on how far the slick has reached and where it's headed.

Yes, I have read the post about east-coast impact, but that at least will be awhile off. Hopefully we can squeeze a June vacation in before the possibility of impact on the east coast is imminent. I can't even imagine hearing that the slick has reached The Keys, etc.

It is dissapointing mostly because we spent so long finding just the right condo, and also neither one of us has been to the Gulf. Also going to miss out on St. Andrews

Sorry, PCB area but this is one summer vacationer that BP already lost you.
"If the oil slick doesn't get into the Loop Current, which would rapidly send the oil around the tip of Florida in a week, the wind direction would have to change from west to east in order to push the slick toward the western Florida peninsula.

The east coast impact is definitely something to watch. Right now we're investigating the vacation there, but I guess the coming week will really tell a lot about east-coast impact. If it gets caught in the current and starts flowing around the state, it will probably be time to schedule a trip to the mountains. I think this whole thing is such a tragedy, and it came completely out of nowhere. Goes to show just how dangerous off-shore drilling can be.

Regarding the possibility of pan-handle impact, it is my understanding that oil will be physically washing up in Pensacola on Monday (which, given the exponential growth of this thing could mean Sunday, imho). If there's tar-balls in Pensacola on Monday, I don't see much of a chance for a PCB miss in the next few weeks. It's 100 miles by car--even less as the crow flies.

I really wish we could stick PCB, especially given that east coast isn't entirely "safe" either, but I think the safest bet right now is to move as far away from the slick as you can right now, and just keep an eye on movement. If this thing sweeps around the entire state then it's going to be another thing to consider entirely.

I honestly don't see how it could be avoided as The Loop is only 35 miles south of the slick. I am not trying to rain on your parade, really ...sorry!!

"The Gulf Stream runs up the eastern coast of Florida. Sheng said he believes it is entirely possible, even probable, that this will happen, thus impacting the beaches from Miami to Jacksonville. The Loop Current is about 35 miles south of the slick, which currently is 125 miles wide and 40 miles long."

We go to PCB every summer. We stay @ Pinnacle Port....We have stayed in other condo's farther down but for the past 3 yrs we have stayed @ Pinnacle Port its a great place for a family with a private beach and all gated entrance. We were really looking forward to going so i hope this doesnt mess our vacation up..we cant go untill July we have lots of time to cancel our reservations if needed. My brother seems to think it will be just fine for us to go by then i hope he is right. I am really starting to have my doubts though. My husband is in the military and his unit was activated yesterday something i wasnt even expecting through this. This has been such a tragic accident!!
