Florida Man steals car containing covid vaccine vials. Dude, there is no place in the state where you can leave a car unlocked with the engine running and expect a good outcome, come on.

Default Post-COVID-19 myocarditis

The Palm Beach Post has done an excellent job of reporting the consequences of a COVID-19 infection on the heart.

<<Post-COVID-19 myocarditis can afflict anyone — including highly conditioned athletes>>
<<In July, ESPN noted “a study published in July in JAMA Cardiology found that out of 100 adult patients in Germany who had recovered from the COVID-19 infection, 60% had findings of ongoing myocardial inflammation. A recent review of myocarditis listed with the National Center for Biotechnology Information cites some estimates that find 1% to 5% of all patients with acute viral infections may involve the myocardium, or the muscular tissue, of the heart....”

Short-term effects are related to severity of illness and ranges from asymptomatic courses to failure of other organs and intensive care unit hospitalizations. Once the inflammation subsides, scarring can cause long-term effects in heart function and structure with weakening of the heart muscle, rhythm problems with the potential of sudden cardiac death and congestive heart failure....

Have your heart checked even if you think you are breathing fine after COVID-19 and specifically follow up with a cardiovascular specialist who has knowledge and expertise in COVID-19. It will not only help in identifying risk factors for cardiovascular disease but also will provide the ability to screen at early stages for myocarditis and other heart and vascular illnesses associated with the disease. We are in the process of launching a COVID-19 center for cardiovascular disease at Cleveland Clinic Florida that will be aligned with the latest research and innovations, and be comprised of an interdisciplinary care team.>>

<<Two German studies, published Tuesday in the peer-reviewed journal JAMA Cardiology, found heart abnormalities in COVID-19 patients months after they had already recovered from the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2.

The first study included 100 patients from the University of Hospital Frankfurt COVID-19 Registry who were relatively healthy adults in their 40s and 50s. About one-third of the patients required hospitalization, while the rest recovered from home.

Researchers looked at cardiac magnetic resonance imaging taken nearly two and a half months after they were diagnosed and compared them with images from people who never had COVID-19. The study found heart abnormalities in 78 patients, with 60 of those patients showing signs of inflammation in the heart muscle from the virus....

The findings come after a Cleveland Clinic study published July 9 in the medical journal JAMA Network Open spotlighted a number of cases of “broken heart syndrome,” or stress cardiomyopathy, doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic.>>

True. FL is the third most populous State. However when it comes to cases per 1M, it is #29.

Not bad as that is in the lower 50% of the States.

The idea FL is a mess, is not based on reality. AND FL has an older population and is still doing well compared to most other States.

CA is #25
TX #24

Nevertheless, it is sad that with all the pronouncements about how great a country is or may be, people do not agree to obey da 'rules,' and the population cannot get enough vaccine to those requesting it. Sad, really sad. That's my opinion anyway.

Yes too many self centered people.

Now the vaccine shortage is due to the amount of time and materials it takes to make it and then get it distributed. It isn't easy.

It appears that the Jackson Hospital link (in Miami) is open for vaccine appointments. https://jhsmiami.org/comvac/

Default U.K. variant sweeping across Florida

More lax mask and social distancing policies may make Florida more vulnerable to the more transmissible and virulent U.K. COVID-19 variant.

<<The per-capita rate of Covid-19 patients currently in Florida hospitals is now about 25% above the national average. And new patients are arriving at its hospital emergency departments at slightly higher rates than the rest of the country....

In recent days, more than 30% of Covid-19 samples from Florida indicate the presence of the contagious mutation that has caused havoc in the U.K., according to an analysis by testing company Helix. Nationwide, Helix data suggest the variant accounts for more than 20% cases, though the figures are extrapolations based on a fraction of cases.>>

Florida may be in a race between vaccination rates and the onslaught of hotter weather, which drives persons indoors making them more vulnerable to COVID infection.

<<In addition, Florida’s cases appear to peak at different times than in the rest of the country, probably in part because of differences in climate. Florida saw very little Covid-19 activity at the start of the pandemic, but cases surged in June and July -- a period that generally drives Floridians indoors to escape the heat.>>

Florida's older residents perhaps are more cautious about exposing themselves to COVID-19, even after vaccinated.

<<While Texas and Mississippi recently lifted statewide mask mandates, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis never instituted one, which has prompted concern among public-health experts throughout the pandemic. But local practice doesn’t necessarily reflect the policy: As of this month, 73% of Floridians say they always wear a mask outside of the home, just below the national average of 77%, according to survey data provided by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.>>

Over the past month, on a weekly average basis, reported cases for Florida have declined slowly but steadily and the r factor is below one. In Dade County, the most densely populated and most cholo, the r factor over the past month has been about 1, about where it has been, on average, since the pandemic started.

On a per capita basis on most ways of measuring the extent or not of the pandemic, Florida scores somewhere in the middle of the pack.

There is nothing more or less usual or unusual going on in Florida regardless of any State mandates or not.

We all know what the risks are and how to mitigate them or not.

Each individual calibrates risk according to personal risk tolerance, no matter who says what, including statisticians.

But we still love them all, alive or not.

Good Luck!
