Actually, it's not. My dog had 4 masses removed (one needed a biopsy) and her teeth cleaned last week. The total bill was over $1,000 and this was for ONE vet visit for the year. I know insurance won't pay for all of that but it will pay for some of it. Some years my reimbursements through insurance more than covered the cost of the premium.
Of course, if you're not going to spend money on your pet and put it down if there is a serious accident or illness, then it wouldn't make sense. However, I'm going to do what it takes to get my pet well as long as there is a chance for a good quality of life. It make financial sense for me to spend the money for insurance.
