Similarly, I wish that more journalists knew that there is a huge difference between "ordinance" and "ordnance". I have seen those words confused--and misused--more times than I care to remember.

I suppose the underlying cause is that a huge percentage of the population no longer seems to understand the difference between "figurative" and "literal". It seems that many--perhaps most--people now use the word "literally" when they should be using the word "figuratively".
