Speaking as somebody who always goes for the cheap laughs, I agree wholeheartedly.

It rediculously hard to do a lot of things financially with being the only person in my sons life.

I have to say that, during a 35 year period of grading HS students' papers, I never encountered a student who was unable to spell "ridiculously" correctly, and I encountered students who did not understand the difference between possessives and plurals on only very rare occasions. Those students would now be adults, ranging in age from 30 to 60+ years of age.

However, nowadays, it seems that a significant portion of the adult population is deficient in these areas.
Why?

It seems spelling and grammar no longer count for anything. I am in the 60+ group, and I remember being penalized for spelling and grammar errors no matter what the course was. Now it seems that all is required is to be able to decode what the writer means, no matter how garbled it is.

Yes. I think the discipline of standard spelling & grammar was useful - you had to organize your thoughts, translate them to paper, & work on the mechanics there. Because prose writing is mostly linear, the start, development, & end points had to be worked out & expressed to the best of one's ability.

The use of embedded links & visual media means that linearity isn't emphasized as much as it used to be - which I think is a loss. Linear narrative can be very efficient - which seems to not be valued as much as before, now that we have much more space on CDs & other media also have expanded storage - Digital video recorders, digital audio, Blue Ray & so on. I think narrative in the non-print media has become florid by comparison - but that may just be a different esthetic from what's currently playing out in the market of ideas.

Most of the protesters have no clue why they were there as they can't explain two sentences about any subject other then Beyoncé and Madonna are cool!

I have no problem with peaceful protests but the mess they left and the utterly stupid words from Madonna and the ridiculous claims of this group are so pathetic that this group is played by stupidest people and they are too stupid to realize it.
- ironic when people talk about others being "stupid" when they don't know the correct usage of "then" and "than."

Who was it who repeatedly shouted, "I LOVE the poorly-educated", for several months?
I'm having a hard time recalling exactly who kept repeating those words, but I imagine that he was speaking to people of that ilk.

Or, as a former boss of mine used to say, "People of that ink".
