From an online article regarding electric service in a particular municipality:

A dump truck hit several utility polls and knocked down transformers and wires at Ashton and Danbury streets...PSE&G received a report at 8:45 a.m. of the utility polls being struck.

Was somebody actually conducting a poll regarding utilities, or is the author of that article totally unaware of the difference in meaning between "poll" and "pole"?

Fortunately, according to the rest of that article, "...crews are currently working to replace the polls..."

... there are less smokers in general in Phoenix.

I do not know whether the less and fewer distinction has been brought up here before or not.

Well, I guess that it could have been slightly worse, as that person did manage to spell "sever" correctly, even though the word should have been "serve"!

I used to work with a woman who consistently typed the word "sever" as "severe". Because we were both Paralegals who wrote the documents submitted to the Superior Court in child abuse cases and cases where the state sought to terminate parental rights for persistent offenders, the word "sever" was used fairly frequently in our documents. In the summation of every complaint where we sought to terminate parental rights, we stated, "...thus, The State of New Jersey seeks to sever the parental rights of XXXXXXXXX"

Every time that Anne wrote one of these court complaints, the Deputy A.G. had to correct that mistake.
Anne NEVER seemed to learn the difference between "severe" and "sever", despite having that mistake corrected at least once each month!
