Wholesome" - no, not in reference to food. At one time this word might be applied to a young, fresh looking, well behaved but rather plain girl--one that was not quite "pretty" but if a parent or another adult wanted to compliment her, he would say she looked "wholesome".

"tipple" - to mildly overindulge in alcohol

"unseemly" - my mother used to say this, mostly when criticizing my behavior or the behavior of my friends.

My mother used to call me or my sister a bos duyvil (which sounds sort of like bo-stewvil), applied if one's hair was wild or you were messy looking. Her mother-in-law called her that.

It means "woods devil" in one of the Dutch dialects.

My grandpa will say: "Look at that over yonder!" and I sit there and think "how far is a yonder?"
