I forget who originally said it, but when someone says, "Can I be honest with you?", doesn't it imply that they usually aren't honest?

Not to me. It implies that the person would just avoid the brutal truth in some manner. Maybe just by not saying anything at all.

Our grandparents has many euphemisms to avoid saying the words they considered more profane and many of them have been posted in this thread. "Tarnation", "heck fire" and "criminentily" come to mind.
