Wholesome" - no, not in reference to food. At one time this word might be applied to a young, fresh looking, well behaved but rather plain girl--one that was not quite "pretty" but if a parent or another adult wanted to compliment her, he would say she looked "wholesome".

My mother still refers to such people as "wholesome".
My mother used to call me or my sister a bos duyvil (which sounds sort of like bo-stewvil), applied if one's hair was wild or you were messy looking. Her mother-in-law called her that.
It means "woods devil" in one of the Dutch dialects.
