Does anyone who's been a census worker know if you need a car for census work? Do you go to several different neighborhoods in one day? or can you take public transportation to the site for the day?

You would most likely need a car because where they need the most interviews done will be in remote places. Course each state is different. In Arizona for instance you can plan on being sent to isolated places in the deserts, to Indian Reservations and the Barrios. In the Southern parts of the US you can expect to be sent deep into Appalachia in some states. Alot of those places won't have public transportation. Its said alot will be walking door to door in those areas. So walking is a big part of it.

What a waste of time it was for me to even take the test. It was obvious, due to way they score the tests, that the only ones who will be hired are veterans.

It would be interesting to know how many people they've tested so far...

I took the test in the Beginning of Feb, and scored a 95. I just got a call last week about when to come in for training

Called the hotline and they aren't taking people in my area. However, spoke with a Census guy and he said that the attrition rate is pretty high, so some spots should open up...

Two of my friends who were working for the Census have left, one to return to school full time and the other for a full time permanent position.

I was told we are gonna make 15.00 an hour plus mileage. This works for me, I already have a full time 3rd shift job so the extra $$ will help me pay off debt (and hopefully go to the Lady GaGa concert!) lol
I'm just worried about the schedule a bit. I go in to work at 10 pm Mon-thur but Sunday I go in at 8. Does anyone know how late they generally stay out on Sunday nights?
I don't want to not be able to work b/c of 1 day that may interfere with my schedule....if it does I'm hoping the girl I relieve will stay a little later!
There is no set schedule you work your own schedule as long as you get in the required hours per week. Say the requirement is 20 hrs a week. And you decide to go out at 10 a.m. until about 1 p.m. Mon thru Fri and then on Sat do 2 hrs and Sunday do 3 hrs. That works for the Census!

Heck, we'll have gotten 8 days work instead of 8 weeks.
What exact project are u working under? The NRFU (non response follow up) teams are not even out yet.

Oddly enough I got a postcard from them stating they "know" I am on federal disability and that they want me to apply for a job because they are short of employees. Ahem...that's a little rude to be sending disabled those cards because now all the census jobs are walking and driving not desk work so very few disabled can do that kind of work. I would not even do the door to door job because they have had employees shot dead in the past. Now with immigration worries there is going to be even more antsy people who do not want strangers coming to the door asking questions.
I'm sorry but I doubt very seriously that that happened. The Census only recruit from those that have applied and taken a test. They are not pulling federal records and bullying people into working!!
