"The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting temporary, part-time census takers for the 2010 Census. These short-term jobs offer good pay, flexible hours, paid training, and reimbursement for authorized work-related expenses, such as mileage incurred while conducting census work. Best of all, census takers work right in their own communities. Census taker jobs are excellent for people who want to work part-time, those who are between jobs, or just about anyone who wants to earn extra money while performing an important service for their community."
I took the test last week, and scored a 75. We were told that veterans are hired first, then people that score in the 90's are hired. If they don't have enough veterans and people that scored in the 90's, then they'll look at people with lower scores. Being hired also depends on where you live, and if people are needed in your area.
It's not a guaranteed job, and I won't be retaking the test. It has too many figures in it for. I'm an English, grammar and spelling person.
I have a friend who is working for the Census. Twice times now she's begun work on what was supposed to be a 4-5 week project only to finish after two weeks and not work again for months. If you are collecting unemployment, be careful as to how this will affect you.

I took the test way back during the Summer months. I scored high - I only missed a couple... but, I'm not a veteran.
After seeing this post, I actually called to ask them when they'd be hiring. I was told that were still testing through the end of January. Jobs start in February through March.
What a waste of time it was for me to even take the test. It was obvious, due to way they score the tests, that the only ones who will be hired are veterans.
It would be interesting to know how many people they've tested so far...
As a non citizen I can't apply for fed jobs anyway - well I COULD apply for the census jobs IF I was fluent in a (needed) other language than English.....

My friend who is working for the census is most definitely not a veteran. Maybe they are hiring people who score well on the test...
I know of four other people who are working for the census--housewives looking to pick up some extra cash. None are veterans or minorities. They are friends of friends and my neighbors mom and mother-in-law. Maybe in your area the people they hired all scored 100?

I wouldn't take a census job for several reasons, first I live in a rural part of NE GA and "government workers" going on to properties are not welcome and many times greeted with guns and dogs...noooo thanks.
I'm also un-employed and as a previous poster stated temp jobs can ********* out of your un-employment benefits.
