Don't be discouraged with all the negative comments from those that are going on hearsay. The 2010 Census is hiring THOUSANDS beginning in January. I just got called today to begin working at one of the local census offices on Jan 4th. Yes, I did score high (100) and am not a Vet. This is how the hiring works: they are filling positions at the regional offices first, then the local offices. They are putting the staff in place to handle all the admin, IT work. Then they will hire the field positions, crew leaders, crew leader assistants (these have to train the census takers), and then the census takers.
And like someone stated there has been ongoing work and call back work. For example the ones administering the testing probably worked off and on doing it and got called back.
If you live in the D.C./MD/VA area I know there is a data center in MD that is hiring full and part time. A friend just got called to do document processing at $18.66 hr part-time (she works full time elsewhere), but they did have full time also. So check with your local unemployment office to get the info. This data center will process about 40% of the census forms.
Go to the Census website and go to census taker and somewhere on there it has sample test questions. Not really that hard of a test but I know some just are not good at test.
I applied for a census job, was called for an interview. But really it wasn't an interview there was just about 10 people in a room listening to someone tell us about the job. We all took the test and were told we would be called in mid to late January for a phone interview and the positions would start in late March to mid April. I did really well on the test and if they call I am doing it. Some money is better than no money.
Are there any census jobs for disabled people or are they all jobs that require walking the neighborhood?
The jobs they are hiring for now pretty much all require walking. There were jobs that were hired for a year ago that would ahve been able to accomodate a disability. Sorry.
I got all the questions right on the test--but apparently in my 80,000 person city, 3,000 people applied for the jobs!
Needless to say, I'm not expecting a call from the government anytime soon...
